Our stay included breakfast, and it was awesome - self serve with lots of options. So the stay was easy, and exceptional value for money. And an onsen. Yukatas were provided for loan, toiletries were provided, comfy room, comfy beds. I really liked Matsumoto, the castle was gorgeous and the music and light projections on it at night were stunning.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!

Matsumoto is a mid-size city with several attractions, with its castle being the most famous. Areas around the castle are great for walking, while a bit further away are several parks that offer nice walks and views of the city and surrounding mountains. There are several areas with restaurants and cafes that are lively in the evening, including near the main train station. If you have a car, places to visit near the city include the Venus Line, a popular mountain drive offering fantastic vistas when the weather is good, and Kamikochi with its beautiful view of Japan's Alps, as well as historic small towns such as Narai-juki and Hida Takayama.
Kamikochi is famous in Japan for its mountain vistas, hiking and lodges. Nishi-itoya is a landmark building located near the Kappabashi Bridge, an easy walk from the bus terminal. Its alpine architecture hides the fact that a comfortable Japanese ryokan lurks inside. The spacious rooms overlook the river with Japanese maples framing the view. Beautiful multi course meals are a great addition although not cheap. The changeable weather at Kamikochi meant we always had a cosy retreat to watch the weather play out around us.
Great location right next to bus and train station. Lovely front desk, kind and helpful. We showed up early before check in and they let us store our bags and then later put them in the room for us! Welcome drink between 10a and 10p, good coffee! Room was clean and comfortable. We had a room on ninth floor and it was quiet with a great view. Easy walk to the sights in Matsumoto, including the Castle, Nakamichi St, and Kaeru Machi. Also there’s a convenience store at the bottom for quick snacks and drinks!
The Japanese breakfast buffet was simply exceptional. Many traditional dishes were served, & good quality ingredients were used. If we return to Matsumoto again, we may book this hotel again only to savour its great & good Japanese breakfast spread. The other feature that we like is the onsen - balanced lighting, quality shampoo & bathing wash, & most importantly, a clean place to shower & onsen in peace.
Hotel is conveniently located near to the Castle and to the famous streets in Matsumoto. In 20 mins walking you can be in the train station. Rooms are big for Japanese standards, and beds very Conformable Breakfast is very complete with variety of options. The public baths are also good and convenient. Front desk team is very helpful and speaks good english
Well situated just a few minutes walk from the main train station and close to all nearby attractions such as the Castle and Frog Street. Rooms were sizable compared with usual Japanese standards and everything was very clean. Loved the pajamas that were provided and free noodles in the evenings! Staff were very polite and helpful. Would stay here again!
Close to the station (castle exit), convenient stores not too far from the hotel, walking distance from Matsumoto castle (about 20 minutes).
The hotel is a bit old but really well maintained, staff are friendly and helpful. Shared bath is very nice :)
Coin laundry and dryer in the hotel.
Room for a single person is a very decent size
First time staying at Toyoko Inn and it was great. Clear mission statement shown in hotel TV translated on point into the room. Comfortable, immaculate room at good reasonable value. Good breakfast provided. Stayed the one night, but would have happily stayed longer. Near the Matsumoto station, so easy to travel onwards.
The staff bent over forwards to help us and understand our few words of Japanese, very welcoming. Comfy tatami room, nice onsen, little village on edge of Matsumoto town with some evening food options but no breakfast options. But that was okay because we'd brought food and there was coffee and tea at the hotel.
The location is quite convenient, near the station and the Matsumoto castle. The breakfasts during our stays were very yummy and included in various types. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. Absolutely good for value and highly recommend for anyone who wants to go to Matsumoto.
Handy location, close to train station, walking distance to the castle. Friendly, welcoming staff. Complimentary soft drinks in restaurant with great mountain view. Added bonus - the hotel allowed early check in, the only hotel to do so during our 3 week trip in Japan!
Everything about this hotel was exceptional. The location was near the station, the room is perfect! Breakfast was fulfilling, internet speed was great. Overall it was a great place to stay :) I will want to go stay there when I go back to Matsumoto ;)
The location close to JR Matsumoto and be easily found.
Walk from the front of the Train station and you see the hotel in your right handed side
The hotel is very clean
Staffs are very nice
The hotel provides beverages for the guest during 15-24.00
Gleaming bathtub, makes me smile. The thoughts that go into the hotel design to make it look spacious and toilet flush position. The supper provided. The hotel is just round the corner to Matsumoto station and price point.
Very new hotel in Matsumoto, Nagano. So the room we stayed at was so clean and tidy with a very clean private bath/toilet room.
Staffs were quite supportive and we saw that they were trying their best to satisfy cutomers.
We came for our honeymoon & we had the best time at Fukashisho.
I wish we had another night there.
The hospitality was 10/10.
My favorite place from all the hotels & ryokans in Japan.
Great little hotel located close to the Matsumoto station.
Rooms are bigger than usual for Japanese hotels.
Washing machine and microwave in some rooms.
Excellent breakfasts.
We came to Matsumoto to explore the castle. This hotel was located both close to the train station and to the castle. As a bonus, there were plenty of restaurants close by.
location is right beside JR station and across the bus station. plenty of food to choose around hotel. theres izakaya across the hotel too. 1km from matsumoto castle
One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in all of Japan. Highly recommended! Great location, too; just 1 block from the castle and the medieval shopping streets.
