Located in the Flemish province of West Flanders, the city of Ostend (or Oostende) is the biggest on the Belgian coast. This cosmopolitan seaside resort has long sandy beaches, a modern harbour and magnificent fish restaurants.
Built in September 1905 in the presence of King Leopold II, the imposing Roman Catholic Neo-Gothic church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is the symbol of Oostende. Housed in a former department store built by Gaston Eysselinck, Ostend's Museum of Modern Art has an interesting collection of contemporary Belgian works.
The Oostende Railway Station is a gorgeous building between the Marina and the Vissers Kaai, featuring classical style architecture. Leaving the railway station you will find a stunning fishing market with numerous fish stands selling mussels, crabs and herrings.
Wander around the promenade and visit one of the traditional restaurants to enjoy Dover Sole, shrimp croquettes and tomatoes filled with shrimps. Booking.com has lots of hotels, apartments and holiday homes by the North Sea.
Situated in a strategic position, the beautiful destination of Ostend is 1 hour away from Brussels and is accessible by train. The Ostend-Bruges International Airport serves a big variety of destinations, including regions on the Mediterranean Coast and Canary Islands.

Busy central area. Was quite easy to find our way around. Had to park our car a mile away from our hotel as first green, free parking, area around us. Not great to then have to carry bags back to the hotel. Too cold and windy to go on the beach, but I think it would be lovely to go there when the weather is sunny. We were only there for 24 hours but would like to return to see more of the area.

Ostend is fine for a couple of nights. Some good bar/restaurants where we had excellent steak. Good selection of great Belgian beers too. Ostend is only a half hour from Bruges (even quicker by train), so can be used a a base to explore Flanders. Out of season Holiday town, the Blackpool of Belgium!! Ideal for a base to visit Brugge (15 mins by Train), and the Belgian Coast. Take the Tram along the coast to De Panne near the French border or the other way to Knokke near the Dutch Border.

Ostend was very attractive. There are lots of big green parks to wander through, and a huge sandy beach with a big promenade. There are lots of bars and cafes, and also some attractive old parts of town where Paris-style balconied apartments can be viewed. I visited ManiFiesta, an annual festival of solidarity at the Wellington horse track. It takes place in early September and it's a wonderful opportunity to see live music and dance, but also for debates, films and to meet like-minded people from all over Europe. The large double room was excellent in size, decor and facilities on the 6th floor, with a Nespresso coffee machine. The decor and furnishings provided a very comfortable stay and we would not hesitate to book this hotel when next in Ostend. If you plan to eat breakfast or dinner outside of the hotel i would recommend making a reservation well in advance because all the quality restaurants are usually booked in advance.

The proprietor (Kay) went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed all Ostend has to offer. After drinks at the Tea Room and great restaurant recommendations, we retired to our modern, clean, and comfortable room for a great nights sleep. In the morning we were treated to a very nice breakfast to start the day. I will stay at Hotel Cardiff when I return to Ostend.

Pitty it was not kept in its original colours and finishes and keeping the Fango, Swimming Pool, mosaics, ... from the early times would for sure have boosted the level of the hotel. The situation at the sea-side is of course a very big plus, for sure for Oostende.
