The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta, hotel in Siġġiewi

Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in St Julian's, The Westin Dragonara Resort, Malta offers 2 private beaches, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, one of which is heated, and 3 restaurants.

Relaxed and relaxing. Chairs by the sea work well - kids tend to stay up by the pool which meant less noise (we've served our time as parents of kiddies!). Food was fine. Not much for vegetarians/vegan among us but chef was ay pains to sort us out; could not have been nicer; wanting to be more helpful. Lovely.

Marina Hotel Corinthia Beach Resort Malta, hotel in Siġġiewi

Offering panoramic views across Malta's St. George's Bay, Marina Hotel features a private beach club, diving centre, free WiFi throughout and a total of 10 dining options.

The lovely smiling staff, who seemed in the majority to be Filipino, were all very helpful and extremely polite. They really are an asset to the hotel! We booked bed and breakfast, and the breakfast buffet was extensive and very good. Rooms are nice and have very comfortable beds, the room was cleaned daily, and the sheets were changed every 3 days. We were able to use the facilities at the Corinthia hotel next door, so there were 6 pools to choose from, plenty of sunbeds and pool bars at both hotels. Nice view of St George's Bay and a short walk down to the very lively nightlife of Paceville (if we had wanted it). There are about 6 restaurants in the hotel area. We tried most of them and thought the Italian was the nicest, but we didn't try the Michelin starred one, it's best to book them in advance at all of them as they can all get quite busy. All in all we had a lovely holiday there.

The place is definitely not touristy, which is great if you want to experience a real local vibe. On the other hand it means that there's not much to do - sights are very limited, as well as dining options. It's a good base to explore Malta if you have wheels. Getting to Gozo was less practical - you'll spend 1,5 hrs each way (including ferry).

Siggiewi is a small relatively quiet town away from Valleta and the urbanisation that has spread throughout the north eastern side of Malta. If you want access to these areas know you are rarely more than 30mins away from almost anywhere on the island. You'll also be guaranteed sunshine and temperatures you can cope with in September. Good food is everywhere the only sad thing personally is the lack of wildlife. The extinction that climate activists talk about seems to have already happened on this island. What a shame.

It's an authentic village/small town location with a series of good local restaurants and a great local wine bar. Regular buses provide access to all the main Island towns and sites or it provides a good jumping off point if you have your own transport. Dominated by a huge old church and classic town square with local shops and facilities. Worth a wander through the narrow streets of the old town after dark and a glass or two of local wine in the Levels Wine Bar.
