The location and view were wonderful. The room was clean. We had a top floor room so both sides of the room slopped and we kept hitting our heads until we got used to it.
Located in Port Ellen, No. 1 Charlotte Street has a garden, shared lounge, bar, and free WiFi. The rooms in the hotel are fitted with a coffee machine.

As a former inn keeper I know that sometimes things are not what one might expect, but how you deal with this is a true reflection of how client focused an establishment might be.
I had booked two rooms and my room was exactly as expected, bright cheery and had a great view over the harbour. The bed mattress was a little too soft for my liking and I think might slowly sinking towards the end of its life. That said I did sleep well. The bathroom sink had a loose hot tap as the plastic washer had snapped underneath it. I imagine that trying to get a simple thing like that fixed on Islay is an issue and it caused no problem as the tap worked fine but I would worry how long it might be before a leak happens. The crew who serviced the rooms did a fantastic job and cleanliness was top notch.
Breakfast was simple but tasty and there was a good selection of choices. All the staff I engaged with were delightful but a special mention must be given to the ever smiling Kim on reception.
Despite facing the main road in Port Ellen the hotel was quiet. Th weather was unseasonably warm and dry and the sun shone long and hard; thus the view from the front of the hotel was fantastic.
My friend was disappointed in his room choice. Nothing wrong with the room but simply too small for him and he had selected the wrong room. As the hotel was full he was unable to move room for two nights thus he decided to check out and move to the Islay hotel. No 1 Charlotte Street had no obligation to offer him a refund as it was his choice. However they choose to refund the two nights he had not stayed which is simply 'above and beyond'.
If you want a reasonably priced in Port Ellen I would heartily recommend this place and do say hello to Kim from me.....she is a commensurate hospitality professional with many years experience and is also extremely charming.
Featuring a fitness centre and a garden, Machrie Hotel & Golf Links is situated just outside Port Ellen. This 4-star hotel offers a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi.

Staff very friendly and helpful. Seatrout as main was amazing. Great location within the town.
The Bridgend is well located on the island. The restaurant is good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was disappointing but the bed was comfortable and the shower hot. 3 days on Islay was a good time but could easily stay longer.

Bridgend expertly handles what must regularly be a full house for lodging, dinner, breakfast, and more. Its central location to the sites and destinations across Islay make it a great launching point from which to explore, but it was also nice to return at the end of the day to relax and recover.

The setting, the Staff and the room were very good.
The ambience lacked any atmosphere and was not inviting to us.
Something is needing done to attract local patronage.
This would be helpful in establishing rapport between locals and visitors and demonstrate how friendly Islay people are.

Bridgend is a small village with a big heart.
Bridgend is a small village with a big heart. It benefits from a small convenience store and a two pump petrol/diesel station, as well as a putting and bowling green. Walks can be taken through the nearby woods and guests at Bridgend Hotel can benefit from a day fishing license. The restaurant at Bridgend Hotel is excellent, with a range of dishes made from many locally sourced ingredients. Both the breakfast and dinner are recommended. It's possible to walk towards the sea, though we could not find a way across to the beach - which is probably just as well as it protects the wildlife and potentially nesting birds. The local police officer stopped to say hello and offered us a lift back to the hotel - which was charming. Bridgend is well placed for further exploration of Islay, and would recommend traveling with an OS map to take full advantage of the tracks and pathways (if hiking).

Impulse 2 day visit to Islay to see family.
Impulse 2 day visit to Islay to see family. Bridgend is just one of many lovely little communities on the island. We were looking for peace and quiet, easy nature walks, birdlife etc. We did have lovely weather which helps, spring flowers all over the place, so many birds, even saw hares. The RSPB walking trails are well worth a visit. Food on the island was for the most part local and beautifully cooked, Loch Fyne Oysters are amazing and worth seeking out. Live music at Port Charlotte Hotel Wednesdays and Sunday evenings a total highlight but get there early, t'is standing room only but well well worth it. We had a car which made travelling around easy, and in spring there were not very many tourists or cars compared to other islands we have visited. All in all, if you are after a quiet, relaxed, peaceful and beautiful holiday and are ok with 'Variable' Scottish Weather, this is a bit of a gem.
Absolutely lovely stay at the Bridgend Hotel--we had some issues with booking at the last minute and the staff was more than accommodating and committed to helping us figure it out. The property is so charming and feels like home. Every detail is so lovely and welcoming. We were so happy to come back each night and spend some time playing cards and enjoying drams down in the cozy bar. The rooms were charming and comfortable. The garden on the property is enchanting. Very highly recommended, it made our Islay visit that much more special!
Breakfast was a good range of food in a very nice dining room. Parking was sufficient and safe while the staff was top notch, from checking in to checking out. The room was a bit outdated but otherwise adequate for a nice stay on Islay. The hotel has a bar as well as a restaurant. It's centrally located so everything is within 20-30 minutes on the island, which is a huge plus for travelers with limited time (like ourselves).
This was our first Scottish Breakfast on our trip! It was Beautiful...just not a fan of the Haggis and Black Pudding! Loved everything else and our server was delightful. There were plenty of other options so I had plenty to eat. The dining room is beautiful, very period and inviting. The bar at the hotel was wonderful and we enjoyed our drinks upon arrival. Thank you for our great "First Night" in Scotland!
This IS the place to stay on Islay. Under the watchful eye of manager, Ian, nothing is left to chance. Breakfast and staff lovely, dining room beautiful. Centrally located, rooms well appointed and clean. Warm. Friendly and knowledgeable Ian is happy and available to answer all questions, make local suggestions and call other services on your behalf. Stay at Bridgend if you can! You won't be disappointed!
To start the location is off the beaten track which makes it exceptionally quiet, The host Thomas was first class absolutely nothing was to much trouble, I suppose the stay is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. I think if you stay once you will want to go back. the Breakfast is as good if not better than a five star hotel, wonderful.
This is the rooms for the drivers of our 36 pax group. We didn't get the chance to stay in the property as our ferry was cancelled due to bad weather condition. We appreciated hotel staff called us in the very beginning when the news was released so that we have more time to adjust our itinerary.
Unique hotel. Basically it is like staying as a guest in a stately home. Steeped in history and a real atmosphere about the place. Maybe not to everyone's taste as rooms are not plush and no gym etc but I loved it. Quiet with only a few guests so makes you feel special.
Great location, super helpful staff. We had some booking issues and ferry travel difficulties, and Ian went out of his way to accommodate our needs. Great breakfast and good dinner experience. Clean and comfortable room with gorgeous garden surrounding the hotel.
Lovely room, bed was extremely comfortable. This place felt like an upscale hotel. Breakfast was delicious. The hosts were extremely gracious, friendly and made us feel at home. If we come back to Islay we will definitely be staying here again.
Breakfast was special, served directly by the chef.
The hotel is located in a quiet and beautiful countryside.
It is difficult to access by bus, but in return you can enjoy the typical Scottish natural beauty.
The food at the Bridgend was magnificent especially the dinners. The staff was wonderful especially Meghan, Lauren, and Kenny in that they were most accommodating and helpful. I didn’t want for anything!
Absolutely beautiful hotel. Our room was gorgeous and comfortable. Hotel was in a great location for us as we drove all over Islay. The food is phenomenal, well worth the money!!
It’s a beautiful property and hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean. Dinner was excellent although it’s a set menu. the bar is intimate and well stocked.
