Great character. Easy to walk everywhere but well served by buses and trains. Good location for visiting surrounding area. 15 to 20 mins by public transport to Amsterdam and beach at Zandvoort. Great for bus to Keukenhof tulips. Very attractive city, not crowded and great places to eat and visit.

Haarlem is a pretty town, and a lively destination.
Haarlem is a pretty town, and a lively destination. I mainly walked around, looking at the canals and houses. One of my photos shows one of the older canalside housing (green door). The station is a lovely Art Nouveau building with tiled pictures, the only one in the Netherlands. Transport is easy, and Haarlem is convenient for Amsterdam, Leiden, etc, and for visiting the bulb fields at Keukenhof in spring.

Haarlem is beautiful in it's own right with lots of historic buildings, and charming streets which have been greened with tree, shrub and flower planting. There is the Frans Hals museum to visit, and much more. Take a walking tour of "Monumental Haarlem"
Haarlem is also very conveniently situated for Amsterdam and surrounding areas. We used public transport all the time. Just swipe on and off the bus or train, and everything is taken care of. Really simple, and it all works smoothly.
We also found some really good restaurants for our evening meals.

Haarlem is a wonderful city to stay in as it has the canals, lots of history, good shopping and plentiful restaurants.
The Grotemarkt has the oldest organ in Europe which Mozart played on and Corrie Ten Boom’s house(who hid the Jews in WW2) is better than Anne Franks! The very first museum in the Netherlands is also here-Teylers. The Saturday market is wonderful.
It is only 15 minutes by train back into Amsterdam and you have a better feel of regular Dutch folks in this beautiful town.

First, I really liked Amsterdam.
First, I really liked Amsterdam. But it was really really crowded, even the first week of April. Then, when I got to Haarlem, I realized it was similar to Amsterdam, with all the old world Europe charm, old buildings, & canals, but not the hordes of crazy tourists. I ended up liking Haarlem better than Amsterdam! Even better than Rotterdam, and maybe the Haag (except I only spent a few hours there). Easy to walk everywhere, and I rented a bicycle and rode all the way to the beach and back on easy, nice separated bike paths. Also, the bike riders are not as aggressive as in Amsterdam. So as an American tourist, in my 50s, I felt perfectly comfortable riding my bike all over. Of course, you still need to be hyper aware of oncoming cyclists and cars… also, they had a secure bike garage near the main central Plaza, where you could lock your bike for free, with a guard watching over it. If you left it overnight, you had to pay something. So I was able to lock my eBay inside there while visiting main attractions in the plaza, like the church with the pipe organ.
I will definitely choose this as a base next time, instead of Amsterdam. I considered staying in Leiden too, but never got a chance to go there.

Haarlem is a beautiful safe city with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars. Walking is the best way to get around the city . I would recommend hiring bikes and cycling out to Zaandvort which is completely along a cycle path to a stunning beach. There are plenty of museums and the windmill is worth a visit . There is also a food market in the square on Saturday morning
The double rooms upstairs are more boutique hotel than boutique hostel, apart from the whole share kitchen / lounge thing that comes with hostels.
The staff are so friendly and they / the owner obviously take great pride in the hostel, it is a charming and well kept space. If most hostels were like this I'd stay in one every time.
So pleased we stayed in Haarlem and not Amsterdam. You can easily visit Amsterdam for the museums etc., but in Haarlem you have the best of it without the tourist crowds.
Room was good sized, bed was very comfortable. The staff is very attentive and the facility is nicely maintained. Being near the station was very convenient and the main part of town is just a short (7~10 minute) walk. We stayed here instead of Amsterdam and found that Haarlem has numerous restaurants and some interesting museums. The bus to the airport was super convenient. It definitely beats staying in an airport hotel if you just have a few days between flights.
We had amazing days at Park 43! Since we didn't want to stay in Amsterdam, we decided on Haarlem and were very lucky with an incredible host, attentive from the first contact. The apartment is excellent, with great accommodations. We spent New Year's Eve there because we wanted some tranquility and it couldn't have been more special. It was an excellent stay, we hope to be able to come back one day!
We had a very pleasant stay. The apartment is located in a quiet and idyllic road in the outskirts of Haarlem. Don't let the road there fool you. For us, it was the perfect location to discover the city and the region (including Zandvoort beach) with our bikes and Amsterdam by train. The hosts are very nice and helpful, and the breakfast was rich and diverse. Absolutely enjoyed it.
Haarlem is a charming location and easily reached by 15 minute train ride from Amsterdam Central Station. Our host was wonderful and provided a substantial daily in room breakfast. The room in this 1700's structure is very comfortable and spacious with modern conveniences. There is grocery store across the street and a quite number of quaint restaurants within walking distance.
The Niu Dairy is located 5 min. walk from the center of Haarlem. Friendly and service minded reception staff. The room was airy and the bed and duvet excellent. The hotel operate time slots for breakfast to ensure adequate seating and to reduce crowding especially around the coffee machine. 10 min. walk from the railway station and the no. 50 bus to Keukenhof.
It was clean great location close to station very modern lighting a selection of tea on arrival very spacious for two people or two couples this would accommodate .smart tv sound bar with netfix ,comfortable sofa large kitchen and Haarlem is a fantastic place to stay if you don’t want to stay in Amsterdam trains run regularly and take 20-30 mins
The apartment was lovely. It is located in the heart of Haarlem within a short walking distance of bars and restaurants and the train station. It's a good location to stay if visiting Amsterdam as the train in is quick and fast. It was spotlessly clean and very comfy. The furnishings and facilities were top notch. The decor is very stylish.
Frenchie is basically a lovely restaurant with some really nice rooms above. It's right in the middle of Haarlem which is a beautiful area on the edge of Amsterdam. The room was stunning, old beams, a big bed and great shower. I chose to done in the restaurant and the food was expensive but stunning quality.
I had a lot of Hotel and Guest-Houses in the Netherlands and i can honestly say this B&B is really good. Authentic, Central, self check in, lovely breakfast. Nothing to complain about. There is also a Terrace in a nice backyard :)
Couldn't have made a better selection than the MAF! Everything was perfect, couldn't think of one thing we'd change! When we travel back to Amsterdam we will definitely rebook this hotel.
Excellent location for a short walk to the Bloemendal train station for the central station in Amsterdam to see all the sights, but nice and quiet and good for short walk to Haarlem.
Hotel location is right in front of Haarlem Station. Groceries and Restaurants are nearby. Staffs are friendly and rooms are super clean. Bed is comfortable and cosy.
