FAQs about hotels in New Orleans

Getting its Rhythm Back

The home of jazz, intriguing New Orleans evokes images of Louis Armstrong, wrought-iron balconies and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine. Louisiana’s largest city, in the heart of the Deep South, the ‘Big Easy’ is being regenerated in the wake of devastating hurricane Katrina.

One area relatively unscathed was Bourbon Street – where jazz saxophones ring out of traditional bars interspersed by others offering more colourful nightlife. There are several New Orleans hotels near Bourbon Street, spread around the French Quarter with its distinctive Creole architecture.

To the south is Jackson Square, dominated by the Disney-esque St Louis Cathedral. Horses and carts wait patiently by the square, and locals set up their stools and start playing catchy tunes. Just behind is the legendary Mississippi River whose waters are still plied by paddle steamers.

From the river you get great views of the CBD skyscrapers and beside them is the huge Louisiana Superdome sports venue. Booking.com has several hotels near the Superdome, including some on Canal Street – a historic road where streetcars and the famous New Orleans Mardi Gras carnival pass down.

In the northern suburbs is New Orleans City Park, one of the oldest US parks and larger than NYC’s Central Park. Waterways lining it flow into large Lake Pontchartrain bordered by a bayou – the typical wetlands of the state.

NOLA comes with superb french district night-out.

NOLA comes with superb french district night-out. Restaurants and clubs are chock-full with jazz bands all night long. Prices aren't economical, but it's worth spending few nights in the vintage district as it is like taking a journey to the past with timeless architectural features. Don't miss out a daily tour in the swamp just reasonable miles off the city or a plantation tour. Both come with impressive natural flora and fauna as well as awareness of recent history raising plenty of questions.

    In-town for Jazz Festival (May 2-7, 2024).

In-town for Jazz Festival (May 2-7, 2024). Highly recommend this event. Enjoyed NOLA overall. Felt safe and comfortable at all hours of day and night. Friendly people. Good southern hospitality. The French Quarter has a lot to offer. Almost continuous music by world-class musicians both on the street and inside venues. Frenchman's Street is a good music destination, in many ways better than Bourbon Street. Most venues have no cover-charge. Jackson Square is very historic and well maintained, as is the RC Cathedral at the square. Countless excellent restaurants. City is very walkable and fairly easy to get around in. Washington Square and Armstrong Park are both nice quiet and safe refuges from the hustle and action of the Quarter.

    Something for everyone.

Something for everyone. This was a friends trip with six of us, so various interests. Walking tours, Art Museum, Bourbon Street at night, Plantation and Swamp tours. We stayed in Mid City, so quiet and only three blocks from streetcar (which was easy to use) stop to the French Quarter.

My husband and I thought it was the perfect spot because it is walking distance from the French Quarter and Jackson Square, but was far enough away that we could escape back to the hotel if we needed a break from all the things that were going on. It is also about a 15 minute walk to The National WWII Museum, which is one of the main reasons why we stayed at this Best Western. The staff was always very friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay very much and plan on staying there again when we return to New Orleans!

The staff was the friendliest ever. The room and entire hotel were so clean. Bed was super comfortable. I loved the chandeliers, the hardwood floors, and the art. The full-sized bathtub was a huge hit with me. I took a hot relaxing bath every night after walking miles in the Quarter. The location on the most beautiful street in the French Quarter is perfect...literally a few steps from Jackson Square. We have stayed at many establishments during our many trips to New Orleans, but this hotel will be our pick from now on.

Going to a city like New Orleans we didn't want to stay in a Marriot or a Hilton. While there is nothing wrong with those hotels, we wanted something with a little more New Orleans "flavor" and we got that at the St. James. The hotel was a little understaffed (a problem facing a lot of businesses!), but the staff that was there was very friendly, helpful and professional. And the location of the hotel between the French Quarter and the Garden District was perfect for us. Overall, it was a wonderful place to stay.

location was perfect, close to all the French quarter but quiet. Close enough to Mardi Gras parades but not too close ! There were other good restaurants nearly if you preferred somewhere bit more upmarket and relaxed. We loved Muriel’s in Jackson Square and Gianna. Evening snacks and drinks in hotel 5.30-7 were great if you didn’t want to out or just for an aperitif! Staff were very professional and helpful, especially Erin and Matt who made a real effort with finding us the room which worked best for us.

The location was fantastic. Close enough to the French Quarter for easy walking but far enough to not hear any partying at night. The building is historic and freshly remodeled into the hotel and it's so clean and well taken care of. The front desk staff and restaurant staff were all very friendly and helpful. Really loved this place and would definitely stay here again if we return to New Orleans. The cookies at 3pm were delicious and the rooftop terrace was a lovely place to sit for fresh air.

You will definitely feel safe. Great staff managed the desk so we could come and go all night. It's in the old French Quarter so the decor matches, in this part of the city the historical society blocks hotels like this one from updating too much. So your bathroom facilities may look a little dated your room is the size they were in the 1800s. I LOVE it!!! We come to the city to play and enjoy the old feel of staying in the old French Quarter this place is just what we love about New Orleans

The property is in a very central location, making it easy to get to the French quarter or the Garden District by foot. The staff were extremely friendly and the units themselves were very nice and clean! Being able to use a code for our unit was a big plus so we didn’t have to deal with a physical key for such a large group. All of our rooms had a bag of coffee which was a nice touch for the mornings, but there is a very good coffee shop right next to the hotel - Cafe Bon Ami.

Place D'Armes is in the perfect location close to everything in the French Quarter. One block from Jackson Square and one block from Bourbon Street. They have parking on site for a nominal charge, rooms are beautiful and comfortable. They have gorgeous courtyards and a lovely pool too. All of the staff was outstanding and friendly. Site 61 Hostel is a cool place. It was by far the most affordable accommodation we could find in New Orleans and we were given a big room to ourselves. The location is pretty good, about a 10 minute drive north of the French quarter. I particularly liked the effort the staff went to in ensuring this wasn't a "party hostel" with strict quiet hours which was good.

This place is by far the best place I have stayed near the French Quarter. The parking is cheaper than most facilities at $28/day and the garage/hotel elevators and doors are only accessible by door key so I felt safe. They have complimentary breakfast and afternoon drinks. I wish we were able to stay longer but will definitely be back.

The hotel is an older facility but is located in the heart of the French Quarter. We had an interior room which cut down on the street noise, which can be considerable at night in New Orleans. The room was comfy and had everything we needed. The one breakfast we ate in the hotel restaurant was OK but not fantastic.
