Perfect central location, easy walk to the harbour and town centre. The breakfast here is exceptional, a great selection of greek food, but also the option for English and continental style. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. All Hotels should aspire to this standard. Thank you.

Breakfast was good. There are varieties and especially really like the "Greek yogurt"; three types there, low fat, normal, mixed berries. Room was big and really comfortable. Located in the center of city so everything is in walkable distance. I walked to the port and it was okay. 15mins
And there is a parking lot which you have to pay but it is there. And market in the same building which is very convenient.

The town/city has many new buildings after WW2. There is an extensive shopping area with many restaurants and bars, the older buildings are either being replaced or renovated, but the outlying suburbs need development and some proper Town & Country planning application. The boundaries between domestic, retail, industry & commerce need greater definition.
Great potential for tourism, with areas of domestic and tourist housing showing signs of its artistic residents "flare".

This is good for a weekend trip, but if you are staying longer hire a car and tour, landing here and returning via Chana. We took out the extra insurance via Booking.com, very wise because the vehicle was hit by a driver while parked, who drove off. Due to the state of the roads and the increased traffic this is common, there was another couple in the hire office that had also been hit while parked. Standards of driving in Greece are poor. Booking.com paid out within 24 hours of the claim. This was a return visit to Crete after 20 years. The nation is in steep decline with appalling infrastructure and an unhappy population. We will not return.

Heraklion is now the main city of Crete, where years ago it was Chania. Over recent years the central area has been upgraded with paved walking to the shops and square. If you look upwards you can still see the signs of previous Venetian times and around old constructions. There is a street market area now selling the usual tourist pieces, which has changed from a market that had fruit, vegetables, fish etc. The side streets still have the small restaurants of old. As you walk down towards the harbour area you should visit Ligo Krasi, Ligo Thalassa as their food is superb traditional Cretan and used by locals. The harbour area is good to walk along and watch the cruise ships and ferries. Ferries leave from Heraklion daily to local islands such as Santorini and provide an excellent service. The modernised bus station just 15 minutes from centre will allow you to move to all areas of Crete on clean efficient buses. Heraklion can get very busy during the weekend or bank holiday times, when locals visit and sit around the square in the cafes and small bars, providing a great atmosphere.

Heraklio is a great place to visit!.
Heraklio is a great place to visit!. We stayed for over a month and were never bored. There is a very extensive pedestrian area with a huge variety of shops, places of cultural interest, restaurants and snack bars. The local cuisine is reasonably priced. The city is very busy with locals and tourists mixing in the pedestrian areas.
Heraklio is a great base for visiting the rest of the island as most of the major urban areas are also on the north coast. There are very efficient local and regional bus services and of course car and moped hire.
For those interested in history and culture Heraklio is the place to visit. I do recommend reading up on the incredible history of the island before visiting as this will help the visitor better understand the context of what they are visiting.
We visited in March to April and combined a city holiday with a beach holiday. There are two very long beaches very near the city centre.
Almost everyone we met spoke very good English so we never really got to use any of the little Greek we learned before travelling. In one month we never used any cash as all business take electronic payment per mobile phone, credit cards etc.

It's a nice town with a lot of shops, cafes, restaurants etc etc. People were nice. It has a spider-like outlay and you could easily get lost. GPS was not working well. I ended up searching half an hour for my hotel.

Liked the fact there were lots of places to visit in the town. It’s a mix of old and new and full of places to eat. Bus service is good and not expensive but taxis are expensive to visit around the island. People are friendly and most are able to speak some English but be aware all signs are in Greek so when trying to find your way walking it can be a bit confusing if you don’t speak the language. But that’s part of the fun of the holiday.
great location! Walkable from ferry port for most, though definitely have wheeled luggage. It's not far away, but a healthy 15 minute walk. Really enjoyed the morning view of the ferry/container port. Crete mountains as a backdrop as well and a small island off the coast. Friendly staff and a simple, but quality breakfast. Really enjoyed the balcony! The room is simple, but very spacious. The balcony and grand view make it even larger!
We stayed one night at the hotel, it is the perfect location, right in the middle of Heraklion. Can just pop out and wander around the town with lots of shops, cafes and tavernas. Easy to check in, the room was great and the staff friendly. Breakfast was also great. I would highly recommend and would stay there again in my next trip to Crete. The hotel booked for us a taxi to the airport the next day only took 15 minutes to get there)
It’s been a long time, and through several continents of traveling, that we finally, and fortunately, discovered this impeccable site to stay and visit Crete. I know these words seem overwhelming, but just read the backups. We do not have any words for criticism. Yes, the word we chose for City Lion is “impeccable.” Thank you Chris, Effie, and Monos for our dream accommodation.

Although I could not enjoy the hotel as much I will have loved to because my husband's flight was delayed, both Georgia and Marielena at front desk have don't their best to make my stay as good as possible
The hotel is super well placed to visit the old Heraklion and it venetian port.
I also loved the selection of wines & snacks from Crete (Inc cheese!) in the fridge
The hotel was spotlessly clean, and the balcony we had was huge. There was a large selection of hot and cold food, which was without doubt the best we've had in Greece for many years. Plenty of really nice restaurants nearby, and a few minutes walk into the centre. The beach is about 30 mins walk.Staff were really helpful and friendly
Our hosts were super friendly and helpful before, during and after our trip! The location is in the city centre and harbour making everything easily reachable by walking. The apartment is however in a peaceful side street so you get the best of both worlds!
We stayed for a month and will stay again should we visit Crete again.
Good Location to shops and all the attractions.
Good place to start or end a trip to Crete.
You could pick up rental after your stay, or drop rental off before your stay.
Near airport. A short taxi ride to hotel.
Close to rental for cars.
Great buffet breakfast with hot and cold food.
Beds very comfortable. Room very clean.
A beautiful little hotel. Excellent location, clean and modern in design. The bed was the most comfortable in the whole of Crete. Giannis was welcoming and kind. Have already recommended Domus Ariadne to some friends and highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Heraklion.
We were only here for one night, just before we departed Crete. The Lato is in a good location with easy access to the port. We didn't really take advantage of the breakfast buffet much because we had an early ferry but it seemed to offer a wide selection of items.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the bed was really comfortable and the decor was great. It only opened this year and everything was pristine. A 15 minute walk from the city centre, with good coffee shops a restaurants near by. The hotel parking was a blessing
The property is very close to the port. We stayed there the night before we left Crete because our boat was leaving early in the morning. It is conveniently located for going to the port. Also, it looks as if it has recently been remodeled.
We did not expect to like Heraklion as compared to other large cities on Crete based on other reviews. This hotel added to our enjoyment of this city. Located in a perfect spot that is not busy but still very accessible to the main strip.
The room was comfortable and offered a good view. The location is perfect; the hotel is located near the city centre which is where you don't want to be. There are a few nice cafes including a queer-friendly bar right around the corner.
The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is very friendly and willing to provide tips and help with anything that may come up. Room was large, clean, and had all the necessities. Nearby free parking was a huge plus.
The hotel is pretty close to a McDonalds and also pretty near both to a bus station for the local buses and to the bus terminal in order to go to another places in Crete like Gouves, for example.
- Petros was welcoming and happy to teach us some Greek. He also helped us plan our next days in Crete.
- Room was spacious and modern. It had all the amenities we could have wished for.
Excellent location, beautiful view from the top.
The rooms and bathroom were comfortable and clean.
The staff was professional and friendly.
Best breakfast I had in Crete.
Right near airport (virtually the end of the runway) so convenient for waiting for a flight. Staff nice and friendly. Booked taxi for us. Nice room with all the facilities.
The property lived up to its name and reputation as the #1 hotel in Crete. Room, amenities, services and staff all exceptional. Location was very convenient.
