There were so quiet and peaceful and the staff was so kind.

Enclosed in the scenic woods of west Shimane, Ryokan Nushiya is a 250-year old traditional house established in the Edo period, placed in the middle of a 10,000 square metre private garden. Guests can enjoy local speciality meals at the on-site restaurant. Free WiFi is provided and free private parking is available on site. This was our fourth trip to Japan and we've stayed in many ryokans. This is one of our favorites. The space we stayed at was huge. It was a two-story stand alone building. The seats looked out onto the courtyard with a pond and a lot of trees, which was very peaceful. I'm usually not the type to stay in my hotel/ryokan all day, but this place tempted me to do so due to the serenity of the courtyard. There were two private onsen that were easy to access due to the small number of guests that stay here. The food was fabulous. While walking around one morning I found a hiking trail that led up to castle ruins. The next morning I hiked up to the ruins and down the other side and came out near the Moss Land.

Hoshi Ryokan offers simple Japanese-style accommodations with a flat-screen TV. Guests can wear the provided Japanese Yukata robes and can experience making bamboo art and crafts, if requested at time of booking. JR Tsuwano Train Station is only a 1-minute walk away. Wonderful stay in a wonderful town. Keiko and family are great hosts.

Ohashikan is a 5-minute drive from JR Matsue Station and a 15-minute walk from Matsue-jo Castle. It offers Japanese-style accommodation with 2 indoor baths, free parking and free Wi-Fi access.

The on-site restaurant serves breakfast and traditional Japanese kaiseki dinner. Stunning, authentic and clean room(s), kind and understanding staff who spoke to me slowly in Japanese to assist with checkin, and rules were reiterated in English on documents anyway despite Matsue being relatively rural. Absolutely beautiful view at both night and in the morning, I was shocked! Onsen came free with the stay. Zero complaints, the best stay of our trip around Japan.

The ryokan also offers bike hire. Lake Shinji is 4.1 km from Onsen Guest House Aobato no Su, while Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum is 8 km from the property. The nearest airport is Yonago Airport, 22 km from the property. Kindly owner and staffs! Especially a wonderful show offered by owner! Really a surprise! Good onsen, Everything is clean, here you can have a really japan style experience.

Certain units in the ryokan have private entrance and are equipped with outdoor furniture and tatami. Some units come with air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, washing machine and a kettle, as well as a fully equipped kitchen. So close to the fishing harbour, the room I was assigned was facing it and it was a wonderful view to wake up to every morning there. The room is clean, the futon is very comfortable!

5.4 km from Lake Shinji in Matsue, Hotel Gyokusen features accommodation with access to a sauna, hot spring bath and public bath. It is set 10 km from Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and provides a 24-hour front desk. The ryokan also offers free WiFi, free private parking and facilities for disabled guests. This was a luxurious treat and we all enjoyed it from the welcome by the general manager, the hot spring bath, the food, the room. One of our group had a massage which was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was an amazing buffet of Japanese and Western dishes. The hotel provided transport by shuttle bus to and from the hotel. Communications via booking.com worked well.

All accommodations have a tatami (woven-straw) floor and Japanese futon bedding. Amenities include air conditioning and an LCD TV, while some rooms have a fridge and an attached bathroom. Yukata robes are provided. We got a beautiful and newly renovated old house in this charming village. Breakfast is good. A bottle of hood sake as welcome gift was most appreciated. The house has a view on the harbour on both levels. There is a sound system and a selection of Jazz CD’s to play. We got shuttle service to the train station.
