Yorozuya 4 stars

Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi

Bright rooms come with a traditional decor of tatami (woven-straw) floor, a low table with seating cushions and traditional futon bedding. They are fitted with a seating area, an LCD TV and a fridge. A safe and yukata robes are provided. Close to yudanaka station - the onsen was jaw dropping at night, and we enjoyed our dinner and breakfast course meals a lot. Service was great, and I appreciate the lift to yudanaka station the day we checked out.

Yudanaka Onsen Yamazakiya 3 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

The air-conditioned rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. Each room comes with a TV, a fridge and an electric kettle with green tea bags. Japanese Yukata robes are provided and guests can enjoy views of the river or of the traditional stone-paved streets. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. We stayed at many ryokans on our trip. None came close to Yamazakiya. The host family are friendly beyond belief, always smiling, always helpful. We got a free pick-up from the train, drop-off to the train and round trip to the snow monkey park. The place is cute, we had a huge room with fluffy, comfy tatami beds and a sitting area. Everyone got yukatas to wear around the house. It's a small place with two private onsens and we were easily able to book both for an hour for our group of four, giving us the chance to try two different rooms. We had messaged ahead to book dinner (good English spoken), a vegetarian option was no problem and my, what a treat we got. It must have been 10+ little courses, fine dining at its best. All around, highly, highly recommended! If you enter through the front door, don't forget to take a stroll out the back door - it leads straight onto the village's main street, filled with many cute, ancient houses. A few weeks after coming home, we had a hand-written thank-you card from Yudanaka Onsen in the mail. How sweet is that? Seriously, 10/10 and absolutely unbeatable hospitality.

Yudanaka Tawaraya Ryokan 4 stars

Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi

A 5-minute walk from Yudanaka Train Station, Tawaraya offers Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Guests can relax in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths and wear colorful Japanese Yukata robes. Massages can be requested for an extra cost.

Tawaraya Ryokan is a 10-minute drive from Snow Monkey Park and a 15-minute walk from Heiwa Kannon. Shiga Kogen Ski Resort is a 30-minute drive away. One of my favorite ryokans, I stayed there for 2 nights, great facilities, great diner, great location for Snow monkey park as very near to Yudanaka station, and great staff. Especially the two ladies who manage the place are so kind and very hospitable. I have the outdoor onsen just for myself after long trek at Snow Monkey park, love it!

Minshuku Miyama 2 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

Minshuku Miyama offers Japanese-style accommodations with free Wi-Fi. Guests can relax in the public outdoor hot-spring baths and wear Japanese Yukata robes.

The rooms feature heating facilities, tatami (woven-straw) floors and Japanese futon bedding. A fan, a TV and an electric kettle with green tea bags are included in each. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. The location was beautiful during the winter and despite the heavy snow outside the rooms were warm and comfortable, the onsen was relaxing and it was a 5 minute walk to get to the bus stop to the ski resort.

Daymaruya Ryokan 2 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

At Daymaruya Ryokan, guests can enjoy hot-spring baths and traditional Japanese-style accommodations with free wired internet access. A free shuttle is available from Yudanaka Train Station, which is a 5-minute drive away. The owner was super sweet and helpful (driving to the monkey park and the train station). The onsen were great, the private onsen was almost all the time available! A spacious room and the little town felt like a little fairytale (it was snowing when we were there).

Shibu Hotel 3 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

Offering a free-use reservable hot-spring bath, shared indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths, and traditional multi-course dinners with Shinshu beef, Shibu Hotel is 8 minutes from Yudanaka Train Station on the free shuttle. The traditional rooms have Japanese-style futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor. A wonderful stay. Chose this hotel due to having transportation between Yudanaka train station and the Snow Monkey Park. Very handy indeed! There are two public onsen within the facility (gender separated) and two private onsen (indoor, free and outdoor, 2000yen per 30 mins, or free with select rooms) in addition to the 9x onsen in town. In-room drinks provided (free) and replenished daily with local snacks provided in-room and changed daily also. A nice touch! Tip - choose a consecutive night stay (2 nights) and you’ll have the town onsen to yourself until 3pm when the guests start to check into their hotels. Most only stay 1 night so the town onsen can get quite busy from 3pm. We chose the “no meals” options in our booking and were spoiled for choice within Shibu Onsen (places open from 5.30-6pm), no reservations necessary which isn’t the case for most other towns in Japan!

Yudanaka Yasuragi 3 stars

Yudanaka Onsen, Yamanouchi

Yasuragi Inn’s Japanese-style rooms have tatami (woven-straw) floors, futon beds and a flat-screen TV. Each room is air-conditioned. A fridge, an electric kettle and yukata robes are provided. All guests have access to the on-site hot spring public baths, and they can be reserved for private use. (please inquire at the front desk for more information.) The place feels very authentic and cozy

Sakaeya 3 stars

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi

Located in the centre of Shibu hot-spring area and a 5-minute drive from Yudanaka Train Station, Sakaeya offers Japanese-style accommodations. Guests can enjoy the on-site indoor/outdoor public hot-spring bath and wear the provided colourful Japanese Yukata robes. You can watch monkeys bathing in hot-spring water at the Snow Monkey Park, a 10-minute drive away.

Sakaeya Ryokan is a 10-minute walk from Heiwa Kannon and a 20-minute drive from Shiga Kogen Sun Valley Ski Resort. Zenko-ji Temple and JR Nagano Train Station are a 1-hour drive away. Beautiful boutique-feeling ryokan with really wonderful staff. We celebrated two birthdays and I was able to coordinate the delicious cakes over email. They even helped us take a photo and printed it out so we all had a little souvenir <3 So thoughtful! The rooms and building were lovely, as was the outdoor onsen. We did the private onsen experience too which was a little extra, but worth it especially to spend time with a partner. Food was tasty and yukatas were very pretty. Felt like a little dream.
