Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesRooms facing the back (not sea view) are very small. Sea view rooms are better. Breakfast is nice but could be improved. Did not offer early check in.
Center of town. Location is excellent for boat or diving trips. Small historic property.

United StatesWe would have liked some service at the poolside. It is such a beautiful spot but there was no one available to offer any snacks or drinks. I feel like the hotel has a huge opportunity to make that experience much better, even have some soft lounge or localized music by the pool would have been lovely and relaxing. I think the lunch and bar business could multiply 100 times if there was more effort to grow that business. As a former restaurant owner I noticed many people stop to look at menu and then walk inside and there was no one around to offer them a nice lunch experience or to simply stop and have a drink. I felt like they lost many customers due to this. Maybe this is the way the business wants to operate but I saw such massive opportunity and because the hotel is so special I wanted more for them.
The views were stunning especially from our room with sea view. I liked the location, my family was fishing everyday and I loved seeing the boats come in from my balcony and going to the harbor to greet them. The balcony was where we spent evenings playing cards and having drinks overlooking the harbor, that was perfection!

United KingdomLack of balcony for some rooms. Lack of bar/cafe facility during the day (bar does not open until 1930) and no service around the pool area. Very limited selection of dishes in the restaurant (two!).
The location in Horta overlooking the marina. The outside pool area.

NetherlandsThe (excellent) downtown location comes at a price: good night rest is not guaranteed when a festival of sorts is organized on the village square right next door. We had three nights of blaring music until 2AM in the morning. Very good ear plugs are a necessity in such a case and even then it is not easy to block out the noise.
Very friendly staff and great location in downtown Horta. The rooms on the road side are relatively small, but comfortable. Bathroom has all it needs, but is likewise relatively small. Some maintenance may be carried out.

Czech RepublicWe were in the low season and there was no service whatsoever during the day, except I guess at lunchtime. But as I said, there are pubs across the street. I personally did not like the coffee so much, but that is a matter of taste. This is really a very nice hotel.
We first had a normal room, but these were really a bit small. For 50 Euro a night extra we got a suite, which is like an apartment and has a separate bedroom and a big balcony. You have a spectacular view on mount Pico and the harbour. The staff are very nice, the building is an old fort and the entire feeling is one of a Spanish Parador. To be honest, I believe this is one of the few luxury hotels on Faial (but I did not visit all the others:)). When you leave, there are plenty restaurants and bars in walking distance. The restaurant of the hotel is also very good, but the menu is very very short and did not change during our stay. We got a later check out without trouble.

NetherlandsThe pool hours were very limited - 10.30 to 19.00 only. So we arrived hot and sweaty, just after 19.00 and couldn't swim. Our next day was a trip to Pico, early start, so no swim. But I do understand - the restaurant for breakfast and dinner is at the side of the pool. Keep in mind that there are rooms with a view of the port and rooms with a view of the old wall...
Faial is a great place to visit, staying at this pousada a bonus. Great breakfast, nice rooms, very friendly staff and a good location to reach the ferry.

FranceThe hotel is expensive, especially for Azores standards and for that price you could expect something better. It is probably not worth to spend such an amount of money, you can find similarly nice properties in Horta at a much cheaper price.
The hotel is located inside Horta fortress, an amazing location. It is right in the city centre on the main street overlooking the harbour and Pico island with the volcano. It has a nice swimming pool with the same view. There are some parking spots in front of the hotel.

United StatesThe room needed maintenance attention. Curtain was off the track so couldn’t be pulled closed all the way. No screens on window so several flies in room all days when window opened. The bathroom sink didn’t drain well, toilet required multiple flushes to work; also, there were several hairs on bathroom stool, and by toiletries. The breakfast was mediocre; very limited offerings and there were only a few lukewarm dried out “hot” items (e.g. eggs) more than an hour before end of breakfast. Overall, was disappointed with stay. I also stayed at Azores Garden Hotel which was much better all around.
