Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

United StatesIt is up a decent hill from the main road, but still only a short distance. If you’re coming without a car, be aware that the closest place to get groceries is a convenience store 15 minutes away by walking, or a grocery store about 25 minutes walk. But that’s just how Kaikōura is 🤷🏻♀️
Kitchen is extremely well stocked (especially with spices, which is rare for a hostel). The common space is cozy especially with the wood stove. Great views of the water and mountains!

The property is very central to the main town, which was within walking distance. The rooms were private and comfortable. We had a gorgeous view of the garden and sea. The heater in the room worked perfectly and we had an extra blanket provided which kept us even warmer! The staff were super friendly and lovely!

United KingdomThe bathroom is 2 toilets and 2 showers in one room which are unisex and they close at 10am everyday for cleaning, I understand this needs to be done but as there is only one facility for these, when they are closed you can’t wash hands/ use the the toilet. The sign said it opened again at 10:45, but it was always more like 11:15/11:30. The kitchen also closed at 10am too. The beds were very old and shook so so much, worst bunk beds I’ve ever slept on.
Homely feel with free tea and coffee and lovely log burner fire in the lounge area. Cute dog and cat who both loved a cuddle.

United KingdomThe security felt a little more laidback than I am used to. There were no lockers in the rooms (only very small ones in the lounge that you had to pay extra for), the room doors did not have locks and were left open all the time, and the front door was left open too, so I didn't feel comfortable leaving valuables.
The hostel had a lovely, laidback vibe. It was in a great location, a short walk into the Centre of Kaikoura. All the staff I met were friendly and welcoming. The garden area was lovely, and it has a beautiful terrace with sea views. The kitchen was well-equipped, and the free ground coffee was a really nice touch. The washing machine was cheap at 2 dollars, and you could use the washing line outside to dry your things.
