Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

BrazilWe really loved everything. But I would like to highlight the staff! All of them were amazing, always smiling and helping to make our stay better. The place is incredible, a more private part of the lagoon, away from the more crowded area down south. That makes Aurea the best place for relaxing and enjoying the calmness of Bacalar. They have kayaks and SUP available, which is great. The restaurant is fairly priced, including the beverages. We had many of the options during our stay: hot dog, guacamole, cheeseburger, ceviche, shrimp tacos...Breakfast was great also. You can choose one special option per person and it's really well served. The room has a lot of space and privacy. It is clean, the bed is comfortable and shower is also great. Overall, cost benefit is great! Thanks again to all the staff that made our days even better!

United KingdomTo be honest the Aurea isn't really fancy enough to qualify as 'boutique'. We got hot water in the wash basin but the shower never got beyond just a little tepid. But, it's rarely cold here, so maybe you can get by for a few days without a hot shower. Also, the number of similar places created recently means that its neighbours are quite close, so that apart from the dock the Aurea's lake frontage is quite limited. And – to get to the Aurea you take a dirt track off the main highway, for about 1.5km, which is shared by several small hotels. This is not always clear in the advertising. Bear this in mind if you're not used to bumpy dirt tracks – it's ok, but you have to go slow.
The lake at Bacalar is one of the glories of Yucatán, and the number of places to stay has rocketed in the last few years. The Aurea is one of many small hotel-cabaña clusters along the lake shore north of the town, and has a particularly great dock out into the lake, with loungers and a great big two-story palapa hut at the end – with a hammock hanging over the water, wonderful for swinging idly for a while and then falling straight out for a swim! There are free kayaks for exploring the shore and they offer a good range of lake trips. Our palm-roofed room was nicely arranged and comfortable, with a little terrace in front. All the staff were charming and helpful, especially Domingo with the kayaks, and the food for breakfast and dinner – Mexican/Yucatecan with a ew international favourites – is varied and enjoyable. The wifi worked too, which we wouldn't have expected a few years ago in Bacalar!

AustraliaSome extra toilet paper would have been good. No where in the bathroom to hang your towel.
Location is great. Very secluded and quiet with water access and 10min into town. The jetty out onto the lagoon is the highlight. They also have kayaks for you to use. Staff were super friendly. We would absolutely stay again.

SwitzerlandWe generally liked our stay at Aurea but find that for offering is not enough good in relation to the price and it clearly doesn't have boutique hotel feel (except maybe for the shower). main points for improvement: - staff didn't speak English (and also made no effort to try).I speak good enough Spanish to understand the basics but was impossible to ask any questions and learn more about the place and surroundings. My husband couldn't even understand the breakfast menu as it was all in Spanish. - The room seemed a bit dated (the kettle was rusty inside, one of the kitchen drawers couldn't keep in place and was always half open) - the food in the restaurant was very basic (even though a huge choice) and all easy-preparation dishes (processed food). fair enough, the prices were lower than what we saw in other similarly priced hotels. but some upskilling of the chef could make a huge difference for this place! - i got charged (blocked) my credit card the moment I booked even though i choose the option to pay at the hotel (and I choose that on purpose as it was our last night and we were thinking to use up leftover cash). by now actually the amount from the day of booking is still blocked on my credit card and a second one has been fully deducted. so I hope the first one will be released very soon! it shouldnt happen that a hotel charges you when you select pay on arrival. then just don't offer that option (as some other hotels do) and it's no problem.
The location of this place is fantastic, especially the area around the water and the pier. The sun chairs are very comfy and the water is nice to swim. we could even see a crocodile sunbath in the morning! The rooms look like on the pictures. The shower is very instagramable but honestly not most comfortable one as there is no other shower head than the shell (my husband also had some hygiene concerns about the water that keeps standing in the shell). It's a question of taste though, it worked fine. We had warm water any time. We also really liked that a whole jar of water was provided in the room to refill your bottles. And a big plus point is that you can take the kayaks for free at any time and paddle around the lagoon. Also, we appreciated receiving detailed instructions about how to reach the property ahead of time via whats app. contrary to other reviews, we didn't think the road was a big problem even with a small basic car. just need to go slowly and carefully. what made no sense is sending a QR code via whatsapp. I couldn't open that until now as i cannot scan it since it is on my phone and i have no second phone to scan the code. a link would have been way more useful.

TurkeyIt wasn’t a big deal for us but there was no hot water (maybe there was but not when we are showering) and water was salty. Road to hotel was bad but we had no issues even with a car with horrible suspension.
Its really a beautiful property. Calm and quiet. Beds are comfortable and everything you need is present in the rooms&hotel. Terrace by the sea is out of this world. Restaurant has not amazing food but decent with a good price. Wifi is really good. I would book it again in a heartbeat. Staff mostly doesn’t speak english but they are so nice and always smiling, trying their best to communicate.

United KingdomBeautiful, peaceful stay in Bacalar. You are a little bit out of the town but this means you get a nice quiet spot with beautiful views. The room was lovely and spacious with good facilities and a lovely outside shell shower. The terrace at the end of the pier is an absolute gem and we spent each evening watching the stars. Lovely swings and hammocks in the beautiful clear water too (though the water can get quite choppy in the afternoons!).

United StatesI upgraded to the Superior Suite but I’m not sure what we paid extra for. Our cabana view was of the restaurant and the back of their kitchen. The cool looking outdoor shower wasn’t very functional with a seashell spout that dumped cold water in a torrent.
Lovely landscaped property right on beautiful Laguna Bacalar. It is a very quiet area and we enjoyed swimming and kayaking off the dock and hanging out in the palapa. Lots of bird life. The cabanas were comfortable and nicer than expected.

United KingdomEverything about this place was perfect. I remember reading reviews from other guests telling how they kept extending the stay and same happened to us. The pictures on booking.com don't do the justice. This place looks so much more better in real life. The bungalow was super clean and it had everything we could possibly needed for our stay. Little kitchen with fridge was a bonus for cooking our own food. We loved the bathroom especially the shower with a shell instead of usual shower head. Waking up in the morning whilst hearing so many beautiful birds outside was something else! The hotel provides paddle boards, kayaks and life vests for free. There is also a restaurant on site which offers beers, cocktails, snacks and main dishes. You can get here nachos, hot dogs, pizzas and pastas for surpisingly good prices. The breakfast was included in the price, they offered a variety of different options such as avocado toast, omelettes, pancakes, fruits etc and whatever we tried it was so nice. In addition to it all, the staff members there are amazing! There was an english speaking couple who were incredibly friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. The gentleman in the reception was super helpful. I have no idea how could anyone find anything negative to say about this place!
