Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesCons: it did not bother us that much, but note that there was limited shaded area on the beach; there were 2 umbrellas but otherwise mostly palm trees, which did not provide enough shade at high noon. Hopefully the hotel adds some more umbrellas.
We stayed here in late May for 5 nights. Description: The hotel is located just a few blocks from the main tourist/commercial area and easily accessible. It sits on the water and has its own beach, with the beach bar and restaurant open during daylight hours. Our room was modestly sized but very clean, and it had a great balcony to view the beach from the shade. Food: the hotel bar and restaurant served a lot of variety and was phenomenal. We had the included breakfast almost every day, and we ordered lunch, snacks, and drinks throughout our week. Very tasty and convenient. Service: the staff, especially at the front desk, was helpful, available, and communicative. Tours: we used the hotel’s organized tours for (1) kayaking in the mangroves area; (2) night kayaking to see the bioluminescence; and (3) boat tour with snorkeling, fishing, and visiting Cabo Catoche. All were excellent and reasonably priced. It was convenient to book with the hotel without much advanced planning. Plus the tour guides were clearly knowledgeable about the island and eco-conscious.

United StatesThe room advertised was not the room we got...when we tried to change it, there were no acceptable options. Nothing wrong with the room we had other than we were expecting to be on the 2nd floor. At over $400 per night, the room did not reflect the price paid, however.
Great location, close to everything! Great restaurant on the property serving very good food and cocktails!

United StatesLovely location with a beautiful small beach. Food was good and the staff were lovely. The property has character, and feels unique compared to many of the newer hotels on the island. We weren’t bothered by the noise from the nearby bar and our room had plenty of outlets.

United StatesOur room did not have a balcony, several do not, and it was too hot to open windows. A hammock in the room is not a great substitute. Wifi was sketchy. No pool. No foot wash station so sand was in the room. Limited beach due to high water level was the most challenging issue with beach walkers literally walking around our chairs. Roof top outside lounge eliminated if you have been here before to add more rooms. Tips for staff must be cash only FYI.
Great location, great staff, AC worked well, ocean front, excellent food options and bar. Transportation arrangements to CUN airport were perfect.

United StatesDue to the location it can be loud at night, we booked the stay knowing that - so just beware if you are a very light sleeper. The hotel itself could use some updating, the rooms are very basic and older.
Beautiful hotel, located steps from town and right on the water. Breakfast was delicious with many options, the staff is accommodating and kind. The grounds of the hotel are stunning - loved the proximity to everything. Overall we loved our stay!

United StatesReally was nothing we did not like. One thing to be aware of though, price was quoted in dollars, first half paid upfront was billed that way, second half is paid at property using their exchange rate which resulted in the second half being 40 usd more- I don’t really think that is reasonable as it changed the nightly rate a fair amount.
The staff were super friendly and helpful. Cannot say enough about them. Breakfast was incredibly delicious and so convenient. Property is small and feels really personal. Bed was super super comfortable and balcony view was great.

United KingdomOur room didn’t have any storage space, e.g. no drawers or closet or dresser. We had to live out of our suitcases which is inconvenient, especially considering the hotel charges 4/5 star prices. Most beachside hotels of this calibre also provide bathrobes and slippers - would have been a nice to have. The food was average at best, although cocktails were good. Better breakfast in most other places on the island. The restaurant and bar staff didn’t match up to the hospitality of the reception staff, were often confused and non accommodating, and the kitchen ran out of ingredients often making the experience very inconsistent. While the beach is ‘private’, because of its small size and the nature of the Holbox beaches being open to public, there is a constant flow of people walking back and forth in and around the sunbeds which is not conducive to relaxing. Given that this is an adults only hotel, there are a lot of kids that are running around and often playing in the water very loudly - which again, defeats the purpose of an adults only hotel. Hopefully the staff can be more mindful of this and find a way to facilitate some privacy for the guests.
The reception staff, cleanliness of the beach and property, the size and view from the rooms, and the location of the hotel. The staff in the reception goes above and beyond to help with all requests, and their real-time communication is impeccable! The rooms and bathrooms are large and clean, with a stunning view of the ocean just a few feet away. The hotel has a small beach which I can confirm is the ONLY beach on the whole island that is cleaned thoroughly everyday and all seaweed is removed each morning! This really made all the difference during our stay. There was seaweed piled up everywhere except on the strip in front of this hotel!

United StatesThe only thing I can think of was that our room (#4) lacked electrical outlets. There is one in the bathroom and one for the small fridge (two USB inputs included with this one outlet) Fortunately we travel with an extension cord which expands to three outlets so we adapted. Now, this has nothing to do with La Palapa, but Isla Holbox is struggling with infrastructure issues. The streets are unpaved with huge potholes. When it rains it's a mess. Doesn't seem to be any drainage. Fortunately there are newly laid sidewalks, but come prepared. Fortunately, lots of delicous side-street eateries away from the overpriced mainstreet bars and restaurants. Get away from those and walk the sidestreets. Lots of ATV taxis. Roads are filled with taxis, scooters, etc. Can be noisy. If you stay for a few nights, I you get used to it.
In my opinion, La Palapa is a rare experience in Isla Holbox. Though this was my first visit to the island, I walked often on the beach and within the town and this little paradise is a gem. Friendly staff, delicious breakfast (included), well-maintained property, and comfortable sunbeds right on a "clean" beach. chosen. Restaurant also offers lunch and dinner for purchase, although we chose not do so. Loved being able to walk either direction on the beach directly from the property. I can't say enough good things about this place, AND it is quiet which is rare in a town for with it's loud bars for tourists. My earplug were not necessary. OH...and also...it is only a short, easy walk from the ferry (10 minutes max). Word of suggestion: don't drag all those huge pieces of luggage to Isla Holbox. Pack a few things in a backpack and walk to La Palapa from the ferry dock.

United StatesYou can hear the live music from town until late -- but the hotel provides ear plugs. The biggest issue was getting scam emails from Booking.com (not the hotel, so not the hotel's fault) asking me for my credit card again and other info.

United KingdomThe walls are quite thin so it does get quite noisy in the evenings unfortunately, but the hotel kindly provides earplugs which is a nice gesture. Also, although I enjoyed the ability to have a tab running throughout our stay, it was a real bummer that we couldn’t tip by card. Unfortunately we did not have enough cash and I felt bad as the staff works hard and more than deserves it. So hopefully this is a feature they can include as I’m sure we weren’t the only ones!
The outdoor amenities and setting at La Palapa are wonderful, very close to town yet still feels secluded with its private beach. We walked by the long beach strip that has most other hotels, and there was so much seaweed that guests couldn’t reach the sea (not to mention the smell). However, the water in front of La Palapa was clear and dreamy. The staff was also absolutely wonderful, helpful at all times, there was a genuine positive atmosphere. Finally, we also really enjoyed the food, more so than expected! Thanks to the team for a wonderful stay
