Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Sri LankaNothing to mention as such. More vegan options would be great though. Whilst they do vegan dishes for you on request, would be great to have a few more.
This hotel I am told is 1 of the first hotels on the beautiful Unawatuna beach. Its at the end of the road so you pass a lot cute little shops selling all sorts of locally made things and food. The entrance to the hotel has a nice welcoming feel and VERY CLEAN! As you walk in the beach is visible, so you know you have come to the right place. The rooms are beautiful, large beds, great AC and LOVE the balcony area. It really is nice to sit here and sip on a drink and enjoy some down time. The beds are super comfortable too. Highly recommend the Sri Lankan breakfast!!!

United KingdomImportant to note the late night loud party on a Saturday night. We weren’t so keen on the bacon and sausage breakfast but the staff were very keen to provide us with another option.
Fabulous location right on the beach. The guy on the door was outstanding.

NetherlandsThe shower sink was not cleaned properly causing the shower to flood. The breakfast options were a bit limited. There is quite some reconstruction work going on around the hotel causing noise, but this is ofcourse out of the hotels’ control.
We had a great time here. The staff was kind and helpful: one evening there was a party at the hotel and we could not sleep. They quickly came up with a solution. The location is convenient and the hotel and room are beautiful.

Belgiumthe breakfast is a little basic - omelette or some sort of waffle. there are juices and good coffees, but its a little underwhelming. regarding the menu, as i said the squid was great, but the grilled tuna (and there's a lot of tuna in Unawatuna) dish at around 3500 SL rupees is not up to snuff compared to other places. the same goes for some other items that should be classic staples in the beach so choose wisely. the wifi is not good. you will have some in your room, and maybe some downstairs but the connectivity is not good. the week end (saturday night) dj parties are very loud even from the second floor until 3am as the hotel tries to lure partygoers strolling on the beach to come to the place for drinks. the parking - i came by motorcycle - consists of 2.5 spots in front of the hotel. thats really limited especially as its not possible to leave the bike or the car for that matter in the street there. Finally, when i was there there were major construction works going on in the next door building - which i surmised is the extension of the place being built. its noisy and not postcard perfect. but okay, its not that visible from the beach.
the beach location is excellent. the room i had is spacious and the bed is really comfortable. the television has international channels (which is not common in Sri Lanka) which - when it pours - is a good plan B to stay in. the shower (pressure, quality of material and temperature) was really good. some items on the menu for dinner downstairs are outstanding - some others (see in my critique) less so. In particular, i recommend trying the grilles calamari with aubergine fries and vegetables.. delicious. the staff are really nice guys (not one lady around though ?!). Finally, the beach area of the hotel is really quite decent. its location is really excellent and that was my reason for booking the room in the first place. its still quite expensive though...

United Arab EmiratesThe hotel rooms don't really have a sea view, the view is blocked by a giant tree. You can just have a small glimpse of the ocean.

New ZealandDon't stay on a Saturday night as they have a party night every week unless this is why you are there. We found this out after booking in for 3 nights on the day. Party means thumping dance music that finishes at 4am. It was like trying to sleep in the middle of a dance floor. They need to decide if they are in the hotel business or clubbing. It was offensive. When we checked in the guy didn't get that we would only pay what was the Booking.com price and had to call his boss. It did get sorted. We were told at breakfast on the first morning that there were 2 options an English or Sri Lanka breakfast but you have to advise the day before for the Sri Lankan breakfast. They should tell you this at checkin. Weirdly if you ordered a drink at the bar you then had to walk to reception to pay. Great room but everything else wasn't good.
Room was beautiful, view of the sea, nice balcony with comfy table and chairs. Good shower. Nice decor, had almost a French feel and felt homely. One of the nicest places at this beach. Positioned well on the beach.

New ZealandOur stay at the Kingfisher Hotel offered an interesting experience, albeit with some unexpected aspects. Upon arrival, we noticed that the sheets on the bed had stains, which was disappointing given the positive reviews we had read online. The bathroom, separated from the bedroom by unique saloon-style doors, was a bit quirky and nearly took out my wife in multiple moments across our 1 night stay. The dark tiles and accumulated grime in the shower area were also less than ideal. The air conditioning unit in our room was quite noisy and seemed in need of maintenance, which was a minor inconvenience during the evenings. While the beach nearby was not the best for swimming due to rough waters, it provided a pleasant setting for sunbathing, provided you could secure a sunbed and umbrella. On a positive note, the staff at the hotel were attentive and helpful whenever we interacted with them, which made our stay more enjoyable despite the property showing signs of age. In summary, our time at the Kingfisher Hotel was characterized by mixed impressions—highlighting the need for some improvements while appreciating the hospitality of the staff in a picturesque location.
