Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaThere is a short walk from the JR Hikone Station to the Ryokan, but it was all flat and manageable for me.
The host was very friendly, provided lots of hot water for the room and gave me a lift to the station on the last day. The room was sufficient and I loved the hot stone bath. The location is a short walk to Hikone Castle in a quiet street, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, supermarket and a convenient store near by.

AustraliaTwo floors down for toilet access overnight 😂 This place has been neglected of late which is sad - but I guess with some tidying up / new screens etc the price would no longer be so very accessible for this original experience. It was a bit like staying at your old uncle’s place… but clean ++
Original Ryokan So cool to get to spend a couple of nights in traditional accommodation and see what it actually looks like The onset was fabulous and lockable for privacy

Very traditional feel, hosts gave a lot of space but were readily available when required. Hikone is a lovely area to cycle. I cycled to the next town Taga with the free bicycle (believe you may need to book early if it's peak season) and stopped at Patisserie violet. The hamburg restaurant nearby was superb. For omi beef Ikkyu (mid range price) was delicious. Breakfast is recommended!

FranceSome parts in the room a bit old but it's comfy.
This is really really good value for the location in Hikone. There are plenty of restaurants around. It also has its own charm as a traditional Ryokan. It has a hot bath!

Australia...
Everything. This place is magical, the rooms are so big and Japanese style, I had a room with 2 Tatami beds, a living room, a fridge, a beautiful space for sit and enjoy the garden. You can use the onsen for free. The owner gave us a lift to the train station, which was so kind. If you stay here, make sure to eat some skewers in the restaurant that is just at the front. Overall, this makes my experience unforgettable. 10/10

GermanyPersonally, I did not like the sand pillows, but it fits to the whole ryokan experience on the tatami floor.
The owner of this ryokan himself was worth the travel to Hikone. Super friendly. Super original Japanese. Does not speak a word of English, but makes it up for with his use of google translator :)

AustraliaThe futons could have been thicker and softer and pillows could have been more comfortable.
Lovely traditional style budget ryokan near a large strip of restaurants. There is an onsen which you can use privately as long as no one else is using it at the time. The manager is awesome, he offers you a lift to the station when you checkout which we greatly appreciated. There are some bikes you can rent for free, but make sure you ask early. It was great value for money.

United KingdomIf I was to complain about anything there was a little bit of road noise. Mainly due to my room being closest to the road - all other rooms are situated towards the back of the property. I still managed to get a good nights sleep!
The location was walking distance from Hikone castle - which is a must see. We were also able to walk down to the Hikone Harbour which had a nice sunset. The facilities such as the onsen and toilets were well kept. The rooms themselves were surprisingly spacious. The host was very friendly and kindly offered to give us a lift back to Hikone station.

Gorgeous spacious room, very traditional with an onsen. Staff really friendly and dropped us to the station, very accommodating. Garden was lovely and very calming. I'd book a family room if possible as it's much bigger and large sliding doors.

AustraliaThe area is not alive in the evening, so not many places to enjoy.
We expected a ryokan and this is what we found. The 3-room ryokan was well equipped with futons, microwave and fridge. The ryokan also offers a small but pleasant onsen. Staff were very amiable and friendly, though their English was supported by Google Translator. The place is a bit more than 1km from Hikone Castle and good restaurants.

AustraliaLoved the location, very friendly staff who even organised a second bike that we could use for free. We were provided a larger room as they weren't fully booked which was lovely but the regular room would have been quite adequate. The bath was a welcome relief after long days of walking and riding. The dinner was sensational, especially the Omi beef and the eel. All round good value, a little dated, but wonderful.

United KingdomThis was the best place I stayed in Japan - an awesome, massive traditional room, on a wonderful traditional street (there's a fishmongers opposite that looks like something out of the 19th century). The owner couldn't have been more welcoming and he gave us a lift back to the station in his car the next morning. No lack of comfort, with aircon etc., and the lack of ensuite was no big deal.

DenmarkSince many parts of the building are old, including the room in which I stayed, it took some time to get used to it.
This historic building is from the Meiji period and is situated in the preserved area. It was a very unique experience to stay in such a building of historical value. The common areas were kept clean and the toilet was modern. The owner was friendly and took me to the train station.

United KingdomIt's not a big problem, but just a warning that it's cash only. Lots of cash points nearby but its good to know!
Really lovely, traditional accommodation. The staff were friendly and relaxed, even gave me a lift to the station at the end of my stay. I also borrowed a bike from them to ride around the city and had some lovely views of the sunset over the lake. Everythung was clean and tidy with very nice and strong AC! Also a great location near the castle and the station, as well as being next to a shopping street with places to eat.
