Only that I couldn’t stay longer

The location from the local train station and Nishiki market is highly convenient. The staff are highly attentive, courteous and speak English; especially for those limited in Japanese. The room I was in (Hakusei) was vey spacious and could easily be adapted to fit more people (2-3 at most) and the atmosphere was very relaxing.

The owners are extremely welcoming. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the experience in this traditional-styled accommodation. Both rooms that we booked are relatively large, with dividing doors placed between the entrance, bath/toilet, and the main sleeping/sitting area. The tatami flooring was excellent and elevated the traditional experience. So did the kimono and tea set. The owners also set aside a smaller sized kimono for our 12-year-old daughter. Highly recommend.

It might be because of renovation or the construction, but we had a problem with a weird heavy smell. We were not able to trace it's origin, but they were present in the bedrooms. As soon as we went out from the bedroom to the corridor or small hall/washroom, the smell was not there anymore. I was able to get used to it, but unfortunately my friend didn't have a good time with it.

Excellent location just a few steps away from Nishiki market (food haven) and 5 minutes away from Teramachi shopping street. The neighborhood is a mid-upper income residential area with convenience stores and ATMs within a few minutes reach. The couple managing the Ryokan are very polite, understanding and accommodating. If you are reading this: we loved your warm welcome. Please also extend our gratitude to the old lady who explained us and helped us to our rooms. The rooms were good, spacious and the futon mattresses were really comfortable. Excellent cooling too.

Nice hosts, comfortable room, lovely sentō bath facility. Be aware that they close up shop at 11PM so you can’t do late nights out. Get the breakfast if you want to try new things — it’s varied, traditional, exotic to foreign palates, and delicious. But if you want eggs and bacon, go elsewhere.

This is a typical Japanese ryokan managed by a lovely family. They have very comfortable facilities and it is a cultural experience to stay there. We loved and it is our favorite. Also great location! Have to try the traditional breakfast, really special!

    We liked everything.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The service was very personal - from helping us with our luggage to walking us out to our Uber as we were leaving. My son even received a special child-sized yukata to wear in the inn. The location is a block away from the famous Nishiko Market and walking distance to Gion. The inn is very quaint. The Akebono room was large with a balcony and private bathroom with soaking tub. The futons were comfortable. We had hot tea waiting for us when we arrived and upon coming back from our day’s activities. We loved it. Highly recommended.

Excellent place. The staff were so nice and friendly, the place is really cozy and they give you water, tea, cookies, yukata and more to have a good experience. Also they help us with the laundry (1,000 yen per basket). Unfortunately I couldn’t use the onsen but it looks great.

A little bit expensive. We also stayed in a very new, modern hotel in Kyoto, which was more comfortable and cheaper. But you have to try ryokans too when you come to Japan. And it is really authentic.

It is in a very good, central location. 10 minutes walk from Gion. Very authentic. Nice staff!

Great to experience a more traditional style hotel. The location could not be better. Right near the market. We had stayed further away in a previous few days, and someways I like being further from the tourist areas at a lower cost. But this place is fantastic. The staff is so nice!

Luxury ryokan down the street from Nishiki Market!
    • Leisure trip
    • Family with young children

    • Stayed 2 nights

It was pretty darn expensive--granted, we stayed during the Gion Matsuri, and that could have played into the pricing. It was also just a little "too" nice for us? Its perfect for someone looking for luxury, but I don't know if that was us, exactly. The elevator, while amazingly convenient, felt like it took away from the traditional feel that my husband and I were looking for. I also noticed that the evening after we checked into our room, the room had a fishy smell to it that wasn't there when we checked in, but never really went away. My husband didn't mind because he likes fish, but I was more concerned with the "why". It didn't ruin anything, for me, was just noticeable. I was also very sad that I was too exhausted to chat more with the hosts, as they seemed to be SO kind! If only Kyoto was less interesting, perhaps I would have had more energy to chat.

This was absolutely the most upscale ryokan we stayed at during our trip! The onsen was divine! It was so lovely and relaxing after walking around Nishiki Market for like 8 hours all day. The elevator was also a nice addition! And the rock work and landscape/design of the place was just plain beautiful. The room was so wide and had a personal ofuro. We felt very ritzy!

There's certain hours of reception availability. Gate open at 6:30am, and closes at 11:00pm. Facilities are super clean, comfortable, traditional Japanese ryokan. But if you are looking for something luxurious and fancy such as Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, this is not it.

Location is excellent, within 1-2 blocks you'll find bike rental shop, Nishiki market, all kinds of restaurants and a bunch of Japanese fashion shops as well as North Face, Colombia, with Japanese designed items.

Nice having a community onsen on property but water temperature was lukewarm. Since it is small, would have been nice to be able to reserve for an hour or two.

Great location near Nishiki Market and train lines. Nice old Japan feel and very nice staff/ owners.
