An unforgettable experience from the moment we arrived. The ryokan is tranquil and beautifully appointed. The 2 Onsens are wonderful overlooking the river and extra special having our private onsen off our room. The dining experience - breakfast and dinner is unsurpassed - we have eaten at top restaurants all over the world and I rate the 2 dinners at Hidaji - both evenings totally different, as highlights of our dining experiences. Delicious fresh local ingredients meticulously presented and prepared, created beautiful taste and visual sensations. Breakfasts challenged our western palate somewhat but were amazing and forced us out of our comfort zone. The surprise acknowledgment for my husbands birthday also very much appreciated. I would like to thank the entire Team at Hidaji for making our stay just perfect and highly recommended this stunning ryokan.

This was the best staying-experience we had throughout our 20-days long trip in many cities of Japan. Simply amazing! We got the room with the private thermal bath, which I highly recommend, especially for couples. The overall vibe in this hotel is unique and when you leave, you have this amazing feeling of "I feel rested and fully charged".

Well appointed traditional Ryokan. Super clean rooms and comfy futons. Attached hot spring bath is intimate and cosy. Public baths were great too.. The dinner and breakfast were super delicious

Amazing private Onsen! Dinner Kaiseki is an amazing experience. A great place to enjoy high end traditional Ryokan stay. Staff is extraordinary, and the service is excellent.

The drive to the ryokan is through windy road (which is expected). There is not much to do in the vicinity but that is not really a problem since we stayed for one night only.

The ryokan lobby is cosy and looks luxurious. The room is spacious and has an open-air bath for our personal use, which is really nice. There are also two private onsens (no need to reserve) which offer a different experience and view. I like the Kose skincare products provided. Dinner and breakfast are both elaborate with many dishes. The staff are professional and helpful. They provided welcome drink (hot tea) and fresh milk. There are also complimentary drinks eg Coke which you can collect and bring to the room. We came from Matsumoto, stayed one night and drove to Shinhotaka Ropeway after checking out. Also stopped by at Kita Alps Bridge (Okuhida Onsengo Nakao) to take photos, before heading to Takayama.

A beautiful, stylish, superbly appointed place to stay. Everything had been thought through. They are genuinely committed to sustainability in everything they do, and showcasing the area and its produce. The team there are so kind and thoughtful - they made an already wonderful stay so much better.

There is so much to like about this little ryokan. The room, the private hot spring tub, the indoor tub, the bed and the lounge are great. The dinner is multi course made with local produce and fish. When we pulled up into the parking lot, the staff greeted us at our car and immediately set out our slippers for us. The location is only a 15 minute drive to the shuttle parking lot to Kamikochi. The drive in this area is beautiful.

Nothing not to like!

Everything about our stay was amazing! The staff greeted us so warmly at the door, took care of our bags, and made us feel welcome right away. We stayed in a traditional room which was a very cool and unique experience that I would highly recommend. Both the dinner and breakfast were extremely well presented and there was a ton of food. We also got to wear a yukata to our meals which was fun! Although some of the food was out of my comfort zone, I really loved being able to have a very authentic Japanese dining experience and thoroughly enjoyed it. The onsen in our room was heavenly to soak in, and we also enjoyed the semi private cypress onsen at night, and could hear the river and look at the stars while we relaxed. If you want a laid back, relaxing, authentic Japanese experience I would recommend this Ryokan. Special thanks to the staff who went above and beyond to provide great service and made our stay special!

It’s a bit difficult to access & sometimes it’s difficult to make the bus schedule & the hotel schedules work together, but fortunately, the staff are very friendly & helpful.

Having a private onsen in the room is great, but I wasn’t expecting the food to be the true highlight of the experience! Both breakfast & dinner were superb, cooked with local ingredients using local recipes; Hoba Miso entering my top 10 of fav Japanese dishes.

The private onsen (at the hotel and at the room) is a great feature. O wish i was there in winter! Dinner and breakfast was top notch and very filling! Five star hospitality

It was winter and there are no food choices for lunch around the area unless we take the bus all the way down to Takayama.

Beautiful area and wonderfully decorated. Quiet and comfortable. The dinner and breakfasts were amazing too. There are two semi private baths that you can use with nice views.

Beautifully furnished and spacious room. Premium touches such as skincare, dyson hairdryer, filtered coffee and a flask containing ice water. Indoor and outdoor onsen within the room is beautiful while ‘public’ (first come first served) private onsen is even more gorgeous with mountain and stream views. You will not go hungry during this stay and food (both dinner and breakfast) is top quality.
