Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

TaiwanMugs for making coffee in the room would have been nice, as the tea cups provided were rather small.
We stayed in an old-fashioned but very spacious tatami room with a beautiful lake view. The breakfast both mornings was excellent, featuring 10+ traditional dishes

Everything exceeded our expectations from the stuff to the facilities. I mentioned in a message that we'll be arriving around 6pm via bus and they were waiting to pick us up from the bus stop. 100% recommended.

AustraliaThe hotel was dated and looked somewhat aged from the outside. Even though I am a Japanese speaking Australian, young staff at reception were extremely hesitant to approach me, thinking I couldn't speak Japanese. They need to be confident in interacting with international guests and making eye contact.
The breakfast was the most memorable experience during my stay in Japan this trip (2.5 weeks) I wasn't even sure you could get a kaiseki breakfast, but it sure felt like it. The quality of the food was next level and was accompanied by a serene and tranquil garden setting looking toward the lake. I have travelled to Japan 9 times and I was gobsmacked by this breakfast experience.

GermanyBe aware that the front desk may not be staffed 24/7 and that there are limited facilities for food and drink if you don’t book your meals with them. They set your meal time, and you cannot change it.
We had a fantastic time at this hotel. The staff was friendly, and the facilities were clean. We had a wonderful breakfast each morning.

SwedenThere was quite some confusion upon our arrival. The receptionist that welcomed us and introduced us to the facilities had difficulties in communicating in English. When you arrive, you are presented with a paper written only in Japanese that turns out to be your drink order for the evening, which you pay for upon departure. However, because of the language barrier, we felt that it was unclear whether dinner was included for us or an additional charge and it took quite some time before we could clarify everything. Ultimately, everything went smoothly but there was an initial worry. Since there is an information sheet in English for the public bath/spa, simply adding an information sheet in English for all the rest would take care of this issue.
The look of the hotel and the traditional-styled rooms is fabulous. The spa areas are very nice and relaxing, with hot baths overlooking the lake. There is also a shop in the hotel where you can buy your own yukata. The food in the restaurant and the restaurant manager are spectacular! We notified in advance that there are two vegetarians in our company, and they composed a lovely multi-course dinner and breakfast for us in place of the standard menu (which also received the greatest of praise from the meat eater in our company). All in all, a very memorable stay!

South KoreaI stayed on the second floor, which offers the simplest tatami room. It is a out of date looking but I’d assume that’s why the price is reasonable and nothing was broken nor dirty.
They’re spot on with all the things that you’d want from a highly reputable hotel. The cleanness, great location with incredible scenery, amazing food and not to mention the ‘out-of-this-world’ service quality. For the price, I was very satisfied with the Ryokan experience at Azumaen. I certainly would recommend to others.

Hong KongA bit old for the hotel room and its facilities unless you are staying at the newly decorated rooms.
The hotel is a bit old and the quality of food is just so so. Of course, the food served had a lot of vegetables, which is good. The view of this hotel should be very nice but it was a foggy and the visibility is so low just 20M to 30M.

JapanDue to a misunderstanding about reservations for breakfast, my wife received a surprise phone call in our room which left her in tears and never wanting to visit this hotel again. We had booked a room with 6x Futons and made a reservation for 2 for breakfast in the morning. Apparently the hotel wanted to charge us additional money for our small children (despite the policy listing on Booking.com which claimed that only Children over 13 were charged as adults). We were embarrassed and treated like we had done something wrong, then charged extra fees upon checkout for our kids (over $50). Overall, we were very disappointed with the experience, the misunderstanding, and how it was handled. We were so upset, we didn't even try to use their Onsen (Hot Spring) facilities and just stayed in our room the entire time. The breakfast in the morning was very Japanese and very local without many options. It could be seen as exceptional to some, but the lack of options left us feeling like it was probably the worst of our entire 10 day trip in Kyushu, Japan. Overall, the value for the total cost was just not there. Would not recommend others to stay here.
Nice view of the lake.

GermanyThe room and especially the bathroom were not clean, there was a bad mouldy smell in the bedroom, everything was worn down and old. The onsen was not very clean and very old looking as well. The relaxing room is a joke and even though it said online they offer massages, there where none on offer at the hotel when I asked. Definitely not what you expect for this prize.
The dinner was overprized but good with the only english speaking person explaining the dishes.

SingaporeLocation was out of the way. Too much steep slopes to tackle and was very difficult with wheelchair bound mom. Not accessible for disabled. Onsen was not hot at all. Very disappointed Property is quite old, and the toilet of the room looked not too clean. Rooms also looks a little run down. Air con in the room not working., Informed the front desk but the staff could not do much. We had to suffer stuffy room throughout the night. Restaurant is not available for dinner if never book in advance and no eateries nearby, we had to settle dinner with some biscuits bought at the hotel souvenir shop and coffee at the lobby. Breakfast was totally Japanese, and no bread or other things offered. Not even coffee. But restaurant staff was kind to change one of the beef dishes to seafood when we informed, we can't eat beef. Staff tried hard to accommodate but facility itself did not help much.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Both at front desk and restaurant. Beautiful view and environment. Hotel has transport to send us out to bus stop on our departure.
