The rooms were beautiful. The staff incredibly attentive. And the private meals were amazing. Having our own Onsen in our room was a wonderful luxury. Though not extremely close to Nagano (an hour by train), the location is close to the train station to Nagano (a 10 minute walk) and very close to the Snow Monkey Park (a 15 minute ride) and mountain towns like Shibu. A lovely time - well worth the splurge.

Everything about Aburaya Tousen was picturesque and more. I don’t write reviews often but our one night stay here is one we will never forget. If you are thinking about splurging on a private onsen bath, just do it!

The rooftop was disapointing. You can't see much through the iglu and we were hoping to see the stars. Saying that, it was very cossy and worm inside it. There was no bath/shower inside the room. There was a shower in the balcony next to the private onsen.

We took a room with private onsen and it was great. Dinner was excellent and very special. I strongly recommend it. Hospitality and staff were great. Rich breakfast buffet.

Although it was for sure a great hotel and experience which we definitely would reccommend, we found the price a bit too high. Given the high standard of the hotel onsen, if I went back again I would not book the room with the private onsen as I think it can't justify the very high price.

Great hotel with fabulous onsen (both the room/private and the hotel guests onsen). Spacious and clean room and wonderful roof top bar experience. Staff at dinner, breakfast and at the roof top were an absolute dream of kindness and professionalism. During the private dinner the chef came to prepare the sushi by our table which was incredible. The food was absolutely exquisite using local produce and prepared and presented with such a delicacy as I've never seen before! What a treat! Walking distance from the station but possible to get a ride from the hotel (need to ask them in advance). A great place to stay!

The wonderful staff and excellent service, the kaiseiki dinner is a must, the location (easy walk from station and ideal for a visit too snow monkey park) and mountain views. Our room was well equipped and the private outdoor onsen was a highlight. We took breakfast in the buffet instead of a private room with different menu and it had a range of Japanese and western options. The lovely wonder has run the hotel since she was a young bride. You can see how passionate and proud she is. Very visible leadership and care for her staff and patrons. Did I mention catching the Sakura at the end of the season? So pretty. This is apple, apricot, wine and Sakura country. We loved every minute.

Everything was perfect! The room was wonderful and it was so fun staying at a traditional Japanese hotel. I loved picking out my Yukata. Undoubtedly, the best part was the private onsen on my balcony. It was pure heaven. Second best was the amazing and traditional food. This hotel was a wonderful highlight to my trip. A little on the pricey side, but well worth it for the experience!

A beautiful Onsen-Ryokan located in a quiet and tranquil area not too far from the Snow Monkey Park. The facilities are beautiful, especially the large spacious rooms with private onsens. The dinner was fantastic, and a great introduction to traditional, local Japanese cuisine. There are many rooms and quiet areas throughout the Ryokan to sit and relax. The staff were lovely and accommodating and we loved our visit.

10 out of 10 in everything. The staff were going above and beyond to help you. They took our suitcases near the train station so we don't miss our train. The dinner was one of the best meals we've had in our lives. The baths are actually all natural hot springs. The facilities were exceptionally clean. The view was stunning.

tried to book days ahead for dinner but were told “no we don’t have restaurant” - yes they have restaurant but only for pre booking?!?! Checked out 45 mins late due to car accident from snow monkey park holding up our traffic to return - desk lady was very curt about it, $3 charge late fee - cheap!

Blown away by everything! From the very start the staff were exceptional. The room was beautiful and the private onsen with mountain views was amazing. The private dining was a real highlight of our whole trip. We're vegan and they were very accommodating - everything was delicious and so full of thought and care. If only we could have stayed longer!
