Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SwitzerlandUnless you like snuggling, the bed is a little small. Don’t forget also that you’re in the Royal Mile, it WILL be noisy at night but it’s part of the location.
Amazing location to visit the city, right on the Royal Mile. Flat looks good and has everything you need.

United StatesThe narrow windy staircase was really rough, especially trying to get multiple luggage up there with being pregnant, having our toddler with us, stroller, and my elderly parents. Really wish there was some sort of lift or other way to get up to our floor but understand it is a very old building. The rooms are a little small as well and communication with the property owners was slightly confusing with all the automated replies each time I asked a question.
The location was amazing and the exposed stone made it feel very cozy and authentic.

AustraliaBe aware that this flat is on the fourth floor, accessed by spiral staircase. Not clear upon booking - but important to be aware of for those with restricted mobility.

United Kingdom79 steps to the apartment were challenging!
The location on the Royal Mile was excellent, it was clean and very well appointed. Amazing to see the original walls, you really got the atmosphere of the history of the building.

United StatesWrongly rated at 5*. I don’t know why and how it got the 5 star rating . It should be at most rated 3 star. It is a tiny self checkin apartment . Clean . There is no elevator because it is a history building , but it should be written clearly in the description.
Location. It is a historic building. Nice breakfast place and bar below the apartment.

United StatesThe bedding was poor quality. The duvet was a cheap insert of some scratchy fluff. Also I had a scary incident in the stairwell, emailed the owners, and the never responded. Two heroin addicts were shooting up in the tiny stairwell. I had to step over their needless and drugs and to get past them. When I returned, the rope handrail was on fire. I ran up 4 flights to my room to get water in a tea kettle to put it out. The whole stairwell was smoky. I emailed video footage to the address provided. They did not even respond!
The location was literally in the heart of old town. I could not ask for a better location. The room was cozy.

United StatesThere was no discussion of having to walk up four flights of stairs with our luggage before we purchased the room. This was a very strenuous effort that many folks could not do. This should be very clear prior to having to make a commitment to rent.

NorwayThe general maintenance of the room was very poor. It is expected that accommodation standards in the UK is lower than many other countries in Europe, but I feel that my room at least was in dire need of some TLC. While I had no problem accessing the room, I did meet others that were struggling, so while the instructions are said to have received awards for its easiness, I do believe that things might can be done even more straight forward. It should be added missing ropes (as “handrails”) in the staircase as with such curved narrow stairs, something to hold on to is imperative to personal safety. Very understandably, there is no airconditioning in the building/room, but during warm summer days (which I do know there are not too many of in Scotland), there should have been a way to either open windows or a small individual unit to provide some airflow.
The location is as good as it gets in Edinburgh and is simply superb. I also liked the general style of the room, in an old classic building where natural features like the stone walls are kept in combination with necessary new features like the kitchenette. And that latter is a great addition to the room, making it possible to have small snacks/meals in the room.

United StatesThe dark, steep stairway was scary, especially when carrying heavy luggage. It is not well lit, nor is there much of anything to hold onto. . The instructions to enter independently were long and the walk up the medieval staircase was a bit edgy. I would also add a fan as there could be some stuffy nights. Also, someone was smoking in another room and it seeped into ours. Smoking doesn't seem like a safe thing to do in an old building like that.
The room was located just above the Royal Mile (the windows opened above the street). It was very convenient to walk to everything near the castle, and both Old and New Towns. The room itself was nicely appointed and the hosts left some nice treats for us

AustraliaThe mattress was a little uncomfortable and the wifi didn’t work at all. The stairs to access the apartment are very steep and narrow, so may not be ideal for guests with accessibility issues - however this is clearly advertised by the property, so no complaints. 😊
Great location - idea if you want to be located close to/on the Royal Mile. A quick car trip from Waverley Station. You can also walk easily to/from Princes Street. Interesting historic building. Clear check-in instructions provided by the host.

United StatesThe only downside was that the tub & shower curtain weren’t very clean. Otherwise it was spotless.
The location can’t be beat - it’s on the main drag near all the historic sights. East walking distance to everything. Plus there’s a pub downstairs so you can hang out in the courtyard just below the room with a drink (but it wasn’t too loud in the room). The room was well laid-out for a family: we fit 2 adults + 2 kids in one room which is not easy to find. The stone walls are just so cool, too.

FranceLack of "storage"
All great. A few hangers and some kind of cupboard to hang our clothes would have been great, and it was somehow odd that the only storage for clothes were the drawers of the nightstands. The sort of mudroom when entering is great, especially to leave wet shoes and avoid to dirty the studio apartment, but a couple of hooks on the wall to hang wet coats (spoiler alert, it rains in Edinburg...) would have been great.
