Menu could have been better. The lounge menu was ok, but the main dining room menu was just a little expensive. What we had was good and well cooked, though

Location was good as in the town but on the river so open aspect which was great as the sun was shining

Staff are very pleasant and helpful but not properly trained. For example - the hotel bar area was often left unmanned for long periods of time, staff seemed to wander off and drinks would be served in wrong style of glass. When the bar was busy there were not enough seats- similarly in the residents lounge. In bedrooms the sash cords on windows were broken making it dangerous to safely open them and impossible to keep open. In bathrooms there were no anti slip mats or grab rails in the shower.

Lovely location on banks of Tweed, in centre of delightful town. Comfortable beds.

Lots of attention to detail required to bring this hotel up to really good levels - most wouldn't cost too much to fix IMHO. e.g. All the skirtings and doors and surrounds need a new lick of paint throughout and some carpets need replaced / cleaned. e.g. Remove all the bird poo from and paint all the benches that look over the river. It was a lovely weekend, but folk sat on the grass, rather than sit on the poo covered benches. Dining room has a lovely view but windows are not cleaned well.. The reception area needs a revamp. 1st impressions count and having a hole in the wall where you will find the very friendly receptionist is not a good impression. It should be open and inviting. Carpets up the stairs need deep cleaned / replaced - all part of the 1st good impression. A bigger task is replacing the window frames. Maybe some could be painted up / improved, but our bedroom windows were rotting away with cobwebs, dirt and remains of insects. As for dinner, that was an experience - generally not a great one. Just one young lad on duty, with barman also bringing drinks through as and when required. Uniforms were dirty and appearance was poor (nice enough lads though). Lots of staff including manager on duty for breakfast (too many IMHO) but dinner appears to be a side thought. Invest in it or don't do it at all would be my thought. Food at dinner was very well presented and good menu choice, but starters were hardly even lukewarm (was wary that my scallops had even been cooked properly - they had but assume they sat for ages in the kitchen as only the one lad on duty) and not very tasty and mains were hot, looked good, but quite poor in standard. The whole ambience of the restaurant was poor. Weird music, near empty restaurant, only one staff member, poorly dressed and having to deal with everything the few guests that were present. The whole thing was amateurish and from days gone by I'm afraid.

Breakfast was fab (all freshly cooked to order - didn't mind waiting as there were continental things to keep us going). Room 2 was big with lovely view of the river (as booked). All the staff were friendly. Liked all the old decor and the old paintings and generally the old stately home feel of the place. Bathroom was large and looked fairly new, which was a bonus. It's not far away from being a really top notch place. We would have rated it higher if we had done B&B, rather than D,B&B

House is tired and jaded a little but would not put anyone off staying here. Place is spotlessly clean, food very good, the staff friendly and the location perfect. I would stay here again.

The wait at the bar for the barman to turn up became a talking point with other guests, Suggest a loud bell.

Breakfast and staff superb. Really enjoyed. Poached egg was hard so sent back. Replaced with a perfect one without question. Room was fine and clean, but in need of updating.
