To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

United KingdomUsual issues trying to check in successfully. Long queues at reception and some churlish front of office staff. The second room I was given had many problems - tv and heating not working, previous guest’s detritus left in bathroom etc etc - necessitating visits down (to back of queue) in reception as nobody answers the room phone. It was 5.30 in the evening before I could settle in, having arrived before 3pm. To add insult to injury: the next morning, a housekeeping employee banged on the door at a couple of minutes after noon, pointing at her watch and repeating “checkout time” - despite the fact that I was clearly in the very act of leaving the room with my coat on and bag in hand. The room itself had seen far better days with scuff marks, stains and scratched furniture. The Singapore Hainan Chicken - one of the hotel’s greatest draws - has now had the cost hiked up to an extortionate £25 (compared to the norm of a couple of pounds even in expensive Singapore). I’ve been a regular customer for decades but, at the top dollar prices currently being exacted, I think I may have to give this old favourite a miss in the future. They never seem to recognise me, so I’m sure my absence will not be remarked upon.
Ambience, familiarity, convenience of location. The concierge is unfailingly wonderful as are some other - sadly rapidly decreasing in number - staff members

United KingdomLight control in room 555 was broken so could not use bedside lamp unless we left the wall lights on - hence when I got up in the night for the loo it was a case of fumbling in the dark.
Staff at breakfast were excellent but greeting staff member miserable. Excellent breakfast and good location with good public areas.

United States of AmericaIt’s old. Our first room had a broken heating system so we moved. The second room had an open window in a sealed hotel so the climate system did not work. When we complained it was repaired. There is no feeling of welcome from the front desk staff. For the second year, the front desk had problems retrieving our proper resignation and took FOREVER assigning our room. Breakfast was fine and one of the bellman was super. It’s an older hotel with an uninspired staff.

IrelandI asked for a room near the elevator but the one I got was 60 paces away. Apart from that, everything was great.
The hotel location is great for west end attractions. The room air conditioning was good, because windows are sealed to reduce noise from train line and cannot be opened. Noise was not a problem.

United KingdomI was upgraded at check-in but I am not aware of the extra benefits. The bed was not very big.
The room was very clean, and there were plenty of outlets for charging devices. The staff were friendly and helpful. They have a microwave that guests can use, this was particularly useful. Taxis were stationed close by, High street Kensington tube station is about a 4-minute walk.
