Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta, Iceland, Australia, Greece, Brazil and North Carolina. For properties in these regions, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomA lovely building and gardens with everything we needed for a very peaceful and comfortable stay. The children were able to use the very well maintained outdoor swimming pool when we arrived. Oliver was a fabulous host, even finding us a restaurant locally for dinner and booking this in for us shortly after we arrived. We will definitely return.

United KingdomThe breakfast was fine but serving was a bit disjuncted.
The house is splendid and is still work in progress although not in the areas currently open. The rooms are simple but comfortable and there are areas for relaxation and eating that are quirkily but fittingly designed and furnished. The promised view was given. There was a swimming pool but the weather wasn't great and so we didn't use it sadly. The owner was very friendly and helpful suggesting restaurants for dinner.

United KingdomDinner was a little disappointing and very basic. The option for my friend who doesn't eat cheese was a bowl of plain penne pasta with a side of what appeared to be warm tomato ketchup!
Nice location and a charming old building with an amiable host. Ensure your are up for a good walk through many corridors and several flights of wonky (characterful) stairs to your room! Nice swimming pool and lovely view over the grounds.

United KingdomWell, the inflexible 6 pm arrival time, and general attitude to paying guests
I arrived at 3 pm after a long drive to find no signs of life at the Chateau de Matel. I rang a bell and finally got an answer - I was told that I should have read my confirmation, no one was allowed in before 6 pm. This seemed rather unreasonable...and frankly there was no place to go. The nearest place to it was an industrial estate, and it was going to be difficult to hang around Roanne for 3 hours with two dogs and all my luggage. The host condescended to come to the door = I had rather hoped that I could sit somewhere, go to the loo and charge my telephone , but n o. I could sit outside in full sun. A long lament on the difficulties of running a "hotel" it is in fact a sort of B and B, I guess, to which I said that perhaps he was 9ll suited to the hospitality industry. At that point he said he was canc telling my reservation and I was to leave. I was polite throughout - so off I went, and drove for another 250 km . To their credit, they did cancel the booking and presumably refunded me.

United Kingdomthe check in is very late (5pm) this means you just come there to sleep and cannot really have time to enjoy the facilities. generally, the property is not really what you would expect of a “château “, there are few original features, it is mostly ikea furnished, no wardrobe in our bedroom, no luxurious bathrooms ( a shower and toilet in 2sqm), the double beds are 140 wide, or toiletries, and no access to the salon on Covid grounds (although this must be the last stronghold of restrictions since no one, including the host wore a mask… Covid did not apply either to the breakfast table as the jam (pots straight on the table) and bread were freely interchanged between guests, even before Covid I never deemed this practice acceptable on hygienic grounds hence why hotels and restaurants spend fortunes on small jam pots. least we knew that the jams and juice were coming from Lidl. I nearly forgot about the unwelcoming sets of rules going on throughout the property, firstly, ring instead of turning up to the reception, the host like to be warned that he has to deal with a client, secondly no food or drink in the rooms ??? really ??? a coffee/ tea facility was present at the end of the corridor, nowhere to sit, jus another Covid safety facility where you use the same every things as the other guests, plus really, the kitchen was frankly uninviting. then a fair warning to get dressed for going to the pool as the host “has to show people round for wedding and would rather keep the place tidy” ( on a bastille day after 5 pm, as if… )great, so there is actually no changing facility near the pool, so, do you strip up directly near the pool? Yes! you do! after all you are on the property of the host, and not there to let yourself relax! finally, I was not impressed by the way the host addresses you. in French or English his attitude was a bit rude, perhaps not voluntarily, but after having stayed in over 500 hotels, I have never come across this type of attitude.
the pool is excellent, the castle is just a big house furnished with basic ikea furnitures. it is clean. the place is a seminar/ wedding venue, this is not a luxurious place.

United Kingdomfirst of all this not a hotel it’s a conference seminar centre? the deluxe suite the garden bathroom had no safety mat, making it slippery. no plugs in sinks. no grab handrail to assist getting out of bath. the proprietor was very unhelpful over the difficult situation when our cars were both damaged in the hailstorm. he told us off for not getting to a restaurant booking, but couldn’t offer us any way of getting there, as taxis fully booked. we tried to walk in weather crisis but couldn’t make it. the breakfast was sparse, shared table although other tables available. poor presentation of food little choice, compared to other hotels on this trip. the decor and refurbishment was in poor state of repairs particularly the windows and shutters. couldn’t recommend this château.
