The hotel seems very new with tasteful decorations. The lobby floor has an eye-catching atrium and a small observation deck. My room felt airy and with decent space. A few days before arrival I received an email with detailed instructions on how to get to the hotel lobby from the JR station. Staff were polite and helpful.

Situated in Yufu, 43 km from Oita Bank Dome, 旅館 竹屋 Takeya features accommodation with a terrace, free private parking, a restaurant and a bar. Lovely place about a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. We were there on 2 cold days in March but our room was warm with a heater and electric blankets. Very comfortable beds and an onsen in the room. We had a beautiful view out our window and in nice weather it would be lovely to sit outside but not on this visit. You eat downstairs in a pleasant dining room. The 2 dinners were fabulous and well prepared but we couldn't eat much of the breakfast (it was all Japanese), other guests loved it. But on the second day the cooks made us a delicious breakfast that kept us going all day. The owner is very helpful, he cares a lot about his guests, he's still working on the place and it will be really nice when it's done.

Yes it's gorgeous, perched on the side of the mountain with stunning views and luxury accom like having your own onsen but it was the staff who really made it outstanding....Maria, Tui and everyone else were incredibly responsive and helpful...not only when due to train changes, we were 2 hours late arriving (the kitchen staff held our dinner) but also when we left a phone with our JR passes in the taxi. (which we were able to recover!!!)

A very nice selection of welcome drinks was also offered upon our check-in, which made a very good impression on us.

Very friendly people. Good views from Karatsu Castle. Kyu Takatori tei is well worth a visit. It is a beautifully restored late Meiji period villa with lovely views over the bay. The Hikiyama Festival Float Exhibition Hall is also a treat and I only wish I could have experienced the festival for real. If you have a car then I would strongly recommend you visit the old pottery towns of Imari and Arita. The Kyushu Ceramic Museum at Arita is a lovely serene space where you can see the different styles of Kyushu's ceramic art and it is free.
Must go place in Japan. Has a super sand bath and the number one outdoor hot spring in Japan. Go to the healthy land sand bath, it's got an amazing view and it's right next to the tamate outdoor hot spring - the best view hot spring ever! And go to Nagasakibana cape as well to explore the most southern edge of Kyushu Island. We traveled around by car, much much easier.
Fascinating main urban centre of Kyushu and birthplace of Hakata ramen. Taking the ferry to visit Nokonoshima island park was the highlight of our trip with our 2-year old. Public transport is easy and convenient as in any Japanese city with one quirk - changing lines between Tenjin and Tenjin-Minami station is a long 550m walk each way. But the route through an underground shopping street keeps it interesting.
Beppu is a small and quiet town on the coast of Kyushu. Although I did not spend all my time in the day at Beppu, at night, there were a great variety of izakayas. The majority of the days, I spent doing little day trips do Yufuin and Oita. I had planned to travel to Kurosawa Onsen nearby, however I stupidly forgot to book the bus and unfortunately missed out. If you love onsens then Beppu is a good place to visit!
Fukuoka is a good compact busy city where you can experience everyday Japanese life. A lot less Western tourists, you feel way off the tourist track here. Fukuoka has amazing food and there are a lot of cultural activities well worth visiting. In addition, Fukuoka makes a great base to explore Kyushu especially if you have a JR Rail pass. Many great places are within an hour and a half train trip and you can do a day trip to pretty well most of Kyushu in one day!
Fukuoka is a compact city that's a food haven. One must visit to experience the varied cuisine choices this city has to offer. It's also an excellent starting point to other destinations in Kyushu.
Hakata is the place to stay and get you connected to the rest of places in Kyushu. I liked the day trip to Nagasaki and Beppu. They are the key highlights of my stay in Kyushu
Kurume is a charming city in the south of Fukuoka prefecture. It is actually the home and true origin of Hakata ramen (though it became more famous in the northern part thanks to it being the main city!). That said, coming down for a visit to Kurume is fun and authentic. I recommend visiting Taiho for a true ramen experience! There is a beautiful culture center which has some interesting exhibitions and a lovely park with an observatory (great for kids but I also enjoyed it too!) Kurume is also home to one of the largest fireworks festivals in Kyushu and it takes place every year at the beginning of August. If you're visiting Kyushu around that time, please consider checking it out! (Though it does get busy, the vibe is amazing)
Fukuoka is a nice place to visit both for sight seeing and leisure shopping. One should try driving around in Kyushu to experience the mountains n the other prefectures.
Surrounded by nature, natural hot spring and great villages, Kumamoto is a great place to go relax and try some of the great Kyushu’s food. Basashi (horse sashimi) and Torisashi (chicken sashimi) is something typical, together with tonkotzu ramen and many other specialities, Kumamoto will take a good care of you and your palate. The city center with his craft shops and markets is lovely, but the good thing of Kumamoto is all the countryside villages and natural hotsprings, a suggestion is: rent a car and drive around!
Comfort Hotel is now my preferred hotel chain in Japan, this is second time in an hotel from same chain and again it exceed our expectation. Amazing value for money: good location close to many restaurants, clean and functional rooms, nice breakfast (not exceptional but good enough with decent choices for both japanese and western taste), this hotel in particular is brand new and bathroom are very modern. Hotel has also laundry (again brand new machines! ultra efficient) which is very convenient for a family like us travelling in Kyushu.
Located across Hakata Train station and Bus Terminal, the hotel offers excellent access to explore the city and other key attractions in Kyushu. Level B1 is connected to Chikushi Exit 7 (East) of Hakata station offering sheltered pathway to Airport Line. Breakfast is served between a choice of Japanese or Western cuisines and delicious. Room is spacious and interior is new and clean. Overall, Hotel Miyako Fukuoka offers a five-star stay with top-notch service, comfort, and amenities. Highly recommended!
Breakfast was good with good variety and quality. Bedding was comfortable and adequate toiletries were provided. Luggage can be stored before check in and we left it with the hotel for 5 days before returning from southern Kyushu. (But may not be possible for more than 5 days. Pls check). Exit through East Gate and turn right at Clio Court Hotel ( this hotel is literally next to the East Gate of Hakata station). Walk straight down 1½ blocks and it's opposite Yodabashi Big Camera.
The staff were very friendly and the location was excellent. It had easy access to the JR Kyushu Saga Station/Saga-eki Bus Center, as well as a good variety of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. When I stayed here, there was a substantial rainstorm which caused a major change in my travel plans. The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating and allowed me to adjust my booking (though I did have to change rooms) with no issues.
We asked airport shuttle bus, how to get back to Kyushu airport to the staff. They were very helpful in writing, and drawing the map for us. Because we were very confused about which bus terminal number we should be in! They spent roughly 30 minutes to convince me, which is a great deal. Thank you so much! The curry at night and in the morning, I liked the potato especially, were lovely. Soothing the tummy of tired tourists!
The breakfast was exceptional and was much more than expected. A nice touch was the sparkling wine. The variety and quality of food was excellent. We also enjoyed a boat ride in the early evening, which leaves just outside the hotel. The Captain was great and he took time after the ride to answer some questions. We enjoyed the walk through the underwater tunnel that connects both sides of Kyushu and Honshu Islands.
Taketa
The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating. Me and my wife absolutely loved staying at this traditional Japanese house. And although traditional, the house is very well renovated, comfortable, and clean. The room was cosy, the bed was very comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. I intend to return to Taketa while travelling around Kyushu and I will definitely stay again at this Hostel Cue!
location - next to subway...pleasant surprise to have a massage chair in the room which was a daily 'treat' for us after day long sightseeing or shopping...a great bonus.... and room is cleaned daily which is not always the case in some other hotels... room size is big relatively to other hotels we had stayed during this all kyushu trip
A classy hotel within easy walking distance of the Kokura Shinkansen station and the convention center. The rooms are nice and clean, with plenty of amenities and a beautiful view of Kitakyushu. The breakfast buffet is excellent, with both Japanese and Western offerings. The room service dinner options were also tasty and very decently priced.
The staff team were helpful, polite, and kind. They helped us book parts of our trip which can only be done in Japanese. The room was clean, modern, and comfortable. The hotel is centrally located around Kyushu University and there is a very nice restaurant and a 7-11 right across the street. Plenty of parking spaces are also available.
New, clean, large and spacious. The bunk beds were cool and a hit for our family of 4. Convenient washer and dryer feature in the bathroom made drying clothes quicker. 7-11 was across the street. Checkin was on a tablet but someone is there to assist you if you need help. One of our favorite hotels on our Kyushu vacation.
This was one of the more posh looking hotel during our stay in Kyushu. It is located in a shopping mall that's a short bus ride from the Kumamoto station. It's within walking distance to the Kumamoto castle. They provide amenities like different bath salt that can be used. Staff was polite and friendly.
The hotel receptionist is nice and helpful. The bathroom is large and clean. The hotel location is very close to Exit East 7. The exit is right under the Miyako hotel that next to JR Kyushu. It takes a minute to this Exit and you could get through this exit to the Subway and JR station within 5 minutes.
Beppu
The most satisfying stay we had during our trip in Kyushu. Everything is well prepared in the apartment. We all slept well and soundly during our stay. Very near to the Jigoku. Yummy BBQ just a stone throw away. A worthwhile accommodation if you want to stay overnight in Beppu. Highly recommended!
Room was not well cleaned, the hotel has no facilities, and the price is not value for money. Hotel Nikko Hakata, down the road, is much better for around the same price. Will certainly not stay in JR Kyushu Hotel Hakata in the future.. its Kumamoto Hotel is a lot better and great value though.
Beppu
The staff are excellent . The location is best one in Beppu . The hotel room is outstanding. The dinner and breakfast are excellent too. A good quality and well designed hotel . It is the best hotel to stay in Beppu and likely best in Kyushu. I highly recommend
Fukuoka
It was loud. Some people cook at 1 am, and the people from the next room chat loudly up to 4 am, and their voices were high. This hostel was the most expensive and worst during our 7-day trip around Honshu and Kyushu. The only really good thing was the location.
Breakfast was a good portion, and there was convenient transit both into Fukuoka proper and to Kyushu University, which I was visiting for work. Plenty of restaurants in the neighbourhood to get dinner at as well. The price is very competitive and affordable.
I had already some sort of expectation upon my stay with JR Hotels. Again, it impresses me as well during my stay in Kita-kyushu. The hotel is connected itself to the train station bldg. How much convenient could that be. Room is capacious and I love it.
Minami Aso
A wonderful stay in a traditional Japanese guest house. Clean, comfortable and spacious with stunning views of the Kyushu mountains. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming. The barbecue is not to be missed. Exceptional value all round.
