Going there by such a car, you should count around 1,5 h one way. But with these views and sense that you are in the middle of nowhere, it was such a positive thrilled adventure :) For us this town Djúpavík with a Hotel Djúpavík was the best thing, which we came across in the whole Western Fiords. Definitely worth visiting!!

We had booked 2 nights here in April 2016 and had no trouble finding it. It is down a long gravel track following a fjord so takes a bit of time, but it's well worth the drive. On arrival you are greeted by two beautiful dogs who continued to follow us around our entire stay. We went to reception to check in and were then greeted by an african grey parrot saying "Hello" before the people. Whilst checking in we were able to order dinner for that night at whatever time we specified which was unusual for us, but when we turned up for dinner, everything was ready and we waited no more than 5 minutes, and the food was fantastic! Admittedly given its remote location, you don't really have any options for mealtimes, but this wasn't a problem as the quality was brilliant, and all home-cooked Icelandic food. On our final morning, we awoke to a snowstorm that had shut the only roads out of the westfjords. The staff had no problem with this however, and said we could keep our room as long as we needed to see if the roads opened. When they didn't open, staying an additional night was no problem. Overall, I couldn't really fault this place. All of the staff were lovely, food was great, location was stunning. I'd highly recommend a visit
We toured Iceland primarily on the number 1 highway aka the national ring road, starring in Reykjavik and proceeding counter-clockwise. So by the time we arrived in the area, we had had enough of long challenging drives and especially of gravel roads. As a result, we did not go into the Westfjords much. We nevertheless enjoyed swimming and hot tubbing at the pool in Reykhollar, as well as hiking to the small hot springs and the local boat musuem. We also want to Holmavik and enjoyed the Witchcraft Museum. We ate at our hotel, as there were few other choices, but the food at the Hotel Bjarkalundur was good, and if one stuck to burgers and pizza, did not break the bank.
The capital of the Wesfjords is a great place to stay! Nature and views are fantastic and you can find everything you need: stores, restaurants, infocenter, pharmacy,.. Also a great place for hiking. We will never forget the Westfjords!
Delightful town in the Westfjords. We drove there after exploring Djandi waterfall. Wish we had stayed another night to have time to explore the beaches and bird cliffs. We stayed at Hotel West and ate at one excellent restaurant a few minutes walk from the hotel. Have been told that there is another equally good restaurant down by the wharf. The little bit of the Westfjords we saw from Burduladur to Djandi to Patreksfjordur to Flockalundur was my favourite part of Iceland. We had an experienced gravel road driver and a small four wheel drive vehicle which was good on the gravel roads.
A great little down with some good restaurants & it is a great base for the westfjords. Not the prettiest fjord in Iceland, but it is great to stay in the biggest city in the region!
STUNNING!!! It's unfortunate that many travelers do not venture off the main highway in Iceland to go visit the fjords. Westfjords are the most breathtaking part of Iceland. I wish we had allocated more time for towns like this on our trip! The locals are friendly and it's so peaceful out there.
Ísafjörður is the largest community in Iceland's Westfjords and is nestled nicely between Skutulsfjördur's slopes. Unhurried and uncrowded, this is definitely a place to get away from it all for peace, tranquility, relaxation and pure air is the cherry on the top. Due to it's compact size, it is very easy to get around Ísafjörður and walking around to take in the sights is a must. Make sure to try the local Harðfiskur. Also, take time to ride a bus and visit one of the nearby villages. The views on the journey itself is worth the ride. Enjoy.
The views were stunning, for which the sunny weather helped too (15 degrees celsius), so do take your time to drive in and enjoy the views, as well as the natural hot springs. There were 2 grocery stores, where one was more like a convenience store and the other a supermarket, but we found the convenience store cheaper too. This is also a great base to explore the sites in the southern part of Westfjords. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay there.
Great place to stay in the Westfjords of Iceland. Be warned of the gravel roads to get almost anywhere in the area, but the more than enough reasons to drive them! Town is quiet. We travelled in low season and most restaurants were closed.
It was only used to have a place to sleep. No expectations. Fulfilled all my needs. Westfjords are amazing and made the stay a wonderful experience.
Overall the stay was amazing. We can’t recommend enough to visit Hólmavík and stay at Finna Hotel over the winter time. Perfect stay to split up the drive from Reykjavík to the Westfjords. First off the staff was super friendly and flexible, check in took no time at all. The room was really cosy. The view was amazing, easy to heat up or cool down the room. The bed was really comfortable and it was so nice to be able to make yourself a nice warm cup of coffee in the morning (or tea in the evening) and watch the sun rise over the harbour.
The natural hot springs pool was lovely and the setting was gorgeous. The staff were helpful, rooms were clean and the breakfast had several good options. I appreciated the lounge where you can read or work on your computer at any hour. The hotel is about a 15-minute drive outside the town of Holmavik (where there are gas, groceries, and restaurants) but I felt this allowed us to really experience the incredible Westfjords setting.
Patreksfjörður
This place is a gem and the location is absolutely spectacular. The property is cozy and quaint in classic Icelandic countryside fashion with plenty of sleeping room and a full kitchen. We had already been tubbing on the day but there is a hot tub on the property and a hot spring tub directly across the street. Location wise this is an excellent stopover point if you are heading into the westfjords from Reykjavik.
Located in the "downtown" of Isafjördur, Hotel Isafjördur provides a convenient and comfortable space to launch your exploration of this part of the Westfjords. The staff was friendly. The room was comfortable and updated. The breakfast was above average for all the places we had stayed at this point between Reykjavik and the Westfjords. When we next return to the Westfjords, I'd come back here.
Breiðavík
The host was very nice! The little girl that was helping in the hotel did an amazing job serving everyone at dinner. De food was delicious and the bananabread that we bought the next morning was very good! We really loved how chatty and nice the lady was. This was totally worth the money and if i would go to the Westfjords again, we would 100% book this hotel again. :)
Very clean hostel, renovated recently and decorated with taste. The owner is very friendly and even warned us one night that the northern lights were showing, so we quickly jumped into our car and within five minutes we were in pitch black, able to enjoy the show. Very relaxed atmosphere, perfect spot to go visit the east coast of the Westfjords.
The hotel was nicely situated in the Westfjords and had a nice restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner options. We really enjoyed the different pools and hot pots with varying temperatures. They seemed to have several trails to a lake, a waterfall and the property in general is nice to explore. The staff were all friendly and accommodating.
Flateyri
Absolutely stunning location - this little valley may have been our favorite place in what we saw of the Westfjords. The hostel was comfortable, on generations-old family farmland tucked in the mountains, and the host was welcoming and helpful. The maps with attractions were also helpful to get a sense of the area. All we could’ve asked for.
Flateyri
Very charming historical Icelandic house, turned into a guesthouse. Our room was big enough, with a comfortable bed and nice views. Loved the shared dinning area, and the reading room. Good breakfast. The bookstore in the ground floor has plenty of old-style and well chosen products, plus an array of books about Iceland and the Westfjords.
Ísafjörður
Very modern, minimalist and practical apartment near downtown Isafjordur; complete with a washer for clothes, which at this point in the trip was badly needed. This little gem is hidden in one of the urban neighborhoods near the city center where you can shop, eat and sight see one of the most beautiful cities in the Westfjords of Iceland.
Reykhólar
The host was extremely generous and goes above and beyond to make sure you sure you have a great stay in the Westfjords. Extremely knowledgeable about the area and iceland in general. The room was comfortable, the shared spaces were clean and the kitchen was well stocked with everything you'd need to cook a fairly complex meal.
Stayed 2 nights on our Westfjords side-trip from the Iceland ring road. Communication on location and check-in was clear. Nice quiet location adjacent to coast. Comfortable bed and roomy living space with small wood heater, which was great on cold nights. WiFi and other listed facilities were all good.
Bolungarvík
Great and spacious flat, perfect for a one-night stop while traveling around the westfjords. While being located on the second floor of 2 stories building, it has its own independent entrance and staircase, which makes it feel very private despite being an apartment.
Hólmavík
We stayed at a well maintained Icelandic house in the middle of a quiet town. This was our stop after Westfjords region. Liked the very comfy beds and the overall authentic look of the place. Kitchen was well-equipped - had all the utensils required to cook a meal.
This hotel was continently located to explore the bird cliffs Latrabjarg and the beautiful beach RaõLysander. The room was comfortable and quiet. The staff were very helpful and friendly. This was a good stopping place for a night as we explored the Westfjords.
Great base to explore the Westfjords. We stayed in a part of the hotel that was completely newly renovated and had a very cosy, modern room. All facilities were cleaned daily, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!
excellent, knowledgeable and accomodating staff. Comfortable room. Convenientt location for touring the Westfjords area. Prices are very reasonalbe for iceland! The restaut=rant cooks delicius food, also at reasonable prices.
Þingeyri
Comfortable beds, nice view on a harbour. Staff was very friendly and helpful, breakfast was very tasty. Place is close to gas station. Impressive keyring but not comfortable to use :) We may come back if being in Westfjords again.
Patreksfjörður
It was a very comfortable apartment. We loved the big, well-equipped kitchen, the comfy chairs in the bedroom, and the laundry. Excellent wifi. It is a great home base for exploring the southern part of the Westfjords.
Hotel Flatey is the ultimate retreat after exploring Iceland's Westfjords. Authentically restored accommodation, very comfortable and excellent food on a spectacularly beautiful and sublimely tranquil island.
