Featuring a private pool, hotel has no direct access to the beach, you need to walk out of the hotel for about 6 minutes and cross the road to the beach. The hotel location is great for a short vacation, because it is close to the airport, everything you need is on the property, but if you want an adventure, it is a little too far from the center. Staff is just the best, pool is huge, rooms are spacious and the price is reasonable. There is also Burger King downstairs.

Sanya has lovely beaches, but they discourage a lot of swimming in the ocean due to currents. There isn't a ton to do other than the beaches, so it's not worth a long stay. But there are other things to do on Hainan (hiking and forests). If I go back, I'd probably do half my trip in the northern part of the island and take a train to Sanya for just a couple days.
I spent a day in Haikou (Qilou Snack Street, Wugong Ci) and another in Wenchang (Dong Jiao Coconut Grove, Tonggu Ridge). The attractions were extremely underwhelming - I recommend heading straight to Sanya. My bias was probably heavily influenced by the scorching sun - I went there in summer when it was 35 C outdoors. You can travel around Hainan via the high speed railway - A trip from Haikou to Sanya is around 1.5 hrs and costs under 100 RMB per person. It passes through many cities on the way so visiting other small sights is possible as well, though I do not recommend doing so. I do not recommend taking a private car from Haikou to Sanya -> The drivers are often full of BS and do not keep their promises to drop you right at your hotel, we ended up transferring to another car with another driver, and the second driver left us along the expressway.
Sanya is located on the south coast of the Hainan Dao and is a city which has quite different character compared to other Chinese cities. The coast line is in many places east to west which means a lot of sunny hours. The air pollution is much lower than in general in China and much lower than in the north east corner of the country. The climate is in betwen tropical and subtropical with sunny days and quite hard breeze in the afternoon. As everywhere in the tropics you have to whatch out for wild animals such as dangerous snakes. As there are many tourists Sanya suffers from the normal and general tendency of developing tourist traps. The best way of sight seeing is to rent a car with a driver for a day or less as the cost for such an arrangement is cheap compared to e.g., in Europe or in the US. The hotel concierge service at good hotels can usually give good suggestions and advise. The majority of the tourists are Chinese and that hampers the language development with few people speaking English outside the hotels, where you often can find at least someone speaking the English language. Many hotels are located remote and therefore the guests have to dine at the hotel restaurants to comparatively high prices. The attitude from local people is usually very friendly.
Take a walk around Luhuitou peninsula, very beautiful and tranquil place with lovely ambiances. There's a beautiful newly-built marina, where you can see the most amazing city views from another side of the water. The area where Hainan aborigines live is 5-10 minutes walk away, where people are friendly and street food are of less expensive price and better quality than most places in Sanya.
I was disappointed with the stay in Haikou. There was not much to see! We went all the areas that were recommended by the hotel or internet, including volcano entrance, the old town, the sea food market, etc. but didn't find anything splendid. The city is still under development, meaning traffic is horribly lacking structure, streets are untidy, and seafood markets could break all the food safety rules, and the city view is messy. Overall, we will not visit the city again in our next trip to Hainan.
Beach is better than I thought, but it's so tourist. Typical Hainan fruite is even more expensive than in important in Beijing!!
We passed through Sanya twice to get to other areas of Hainan for surfing. Sanya is very touristy and you don’t get what you pay for. Meal prices are often inflated and poor quality/poor service. Not as nice as Perfume Bay or Sun Moon Bay. We preferred those areas over Sanya.
Impressive and comfortable hotel in SanYa. It has a nice swimming pool and it is very close to the beach and to a lively area with beachside bars. The area around the hotel gets crowded every evening with people singing and dancing. I can absolutely believe that it was the hotel where foreign politicians were hosted when in Hainan, since it is that beautiful.

The pool though there are two and the other was under maintenance. The breakfast buffet is awesome! The Cantonese hainanese restaurant was also very good. The snorkelling was quite nice too as the hotel has a protected coral beach - though a bit costly. In the general area very nice resort setup and not too inconvenient to get into town via taxi.

The little details is what makes Capella the best hotel or Hainan. From check in, breakfast, swimming pool, room, decoration and service, it's all top world class. Pricey but highly recommended to experience Capella at least once.
The resort did exceed my expectations. It was a good value for money for sure! Resort: It’s a massive and very beautiful resort. The area it occupies is really big. The idea of tunnel to the beach is quite smart. Very beautiful vegetation around. Trees, flowers. Colors of vacation! Loved it! Disclaimer for animal lovers: the birds at the pond are taken care of and there is a man who feeds them and cares for them every morning. I rushed to ask as one of the swans was out of the fence not moving away from his partner for couple of days. Turns out he managed to escape and as you know swans don’t leave each other, he was there next to his partner separated by fence. I called the facility to complain that poor bird is heartbroken. The trouble was fixed. I asked if wings were cut short to make them disable to fly but no, birds are raised by the man who works there since their birth that’s why they don’t fly away. Not ideal but they are well fed and have a place to rest and are not in cages. Swimming pools: huge pool in the middle is the functioning one and water in the pool is warm however it’s 1.4m depth. Still did enjoy it a lot! There is one next to it with shallow water 1.2m suitable for kids. The fancy looking one to the right is not functioning. There is plenty of beds by the pool and you can store your belongings inside the lockers for free which are placed next to the pool area. Super convenient. Dining area: big variety of food and enough options of western food, fruits and a salad for healthy eaters :) Rooms: amazing view from balconies. I believe all balconies are facing garden and pool. Clean and nicely furnished rooms. Great shower with bathtub . Beach: not much going on on the beach area. Distance to the beach is approximately 5min. You can wash the sand of your feet at the entrance into resort which is supper convenient. Surroundings: we did not leave the resort as it was super hot to move around.
I chose this hotel because I have already been there and I was fascinated. This time I was with my husband.The area is Dadonghai and is preferred by us. We like everything in the hotel!The garden, lobby, restaurant are very beautiful!The breakfast was varied and delicious! I want to express my gratitude to Zoey and Vanessa who did everything possible to give us a room that met our requirements. A lot of thanks!
Chicken cleaner and accessories
Being a 13 yr old resort, Banyan Tree Sanya has exceeded my expectation. The service and the staff were fantastic, everybody was friendly and helpful, facilities were fairly well maintained and we really cherished the privacy and peaceful environment that our villa provided. I don’t remember having a meal which wasn’t top chef quality - a lovely surprise!

The infinity pool is one of the best tourist attractions in Haitang bay. Our room came with a beautiful balcony and bathtub that had a brilliant view.
The hotel is very good, the infinity pool at the roof top is very nice with amazing views. Here it is important to say that the pool closes from 12.00 pm until 3.00 pm. The rooms are comfortable, but you can smell the humidity. The breakfast has a lot of options, and you can find a variety of Chinese food, but also some western breakfast. Almost all The hotel staff doesn’t speak English, there are some persons who can. They were always ready to help and they helped us a lot, and they are really friendly. As an advice, it is always important to use some Google translate ;)
