The meal was just incredible. Each meal is special, with many local and seasonal ingredients. This gives a proper traditional Japanese meal experience in my opinion, with plenty different textures and tastes. The scenery is breathtaking, with Mt. Ontake. There are free drinks available in the lounge, and the onsen is really big, with two outside baths. The staff is really nice and can speak decent english.
Located in Kiso in the Nagano region, Pension Kaoru provides accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking, as well as access to a hot tub.

The owners are extremely friendly and helpful. They served great food for breakfast and dinner. We had two connected rooms for 5 people and lots of space.

The owner is the sweetest man I have ever met! So kind and wanting to help in whatever way he can! There is a free washing/drying facility. Dinner and breakfast can be included and they are both delicious and highly recommendable! I notified the owner I am a vegetarian and he assembled a 4 course meal especially for me! It was delicious!
The lady servicing during the meals was also very lovely and kind! Japanese service at its best!
The rooms/facilities are over expectations for the price I paid, especially considering the location is close to the mountain. Speaking about mountains: from the hostel you can start your hike to the nearby Kiso mountains! A four hour walk to get to 2956 meters! 3 hours back, or 5 if you want a detour. From the mountain top other huts or a ropeway are also accessible if you want to continue your hike.
Summary: if you want a affordable place with good services, tasty food and a nice location near the forest and mountainside: this is the place for you!

So far the best hotel and best dinner I had in Japan.
One of the biggest headaches when driving to your hotel is finding a convenient place to park, so these properties are on hand to take the pressure off. Options range from secure underground car parking, to safe spots within easy reach of the hotel itself.

Great location and facilities. Staff friendly and helpful.
Easy to find the hotel and they have lot of parking space.
The women in the reception was very helpful and assisted us with restaurant recommendations and the nakasendo trail that we plan to do the next day.
The breakfast was OK plus.
They offer free drinks, games and onsen.
Nice location. Breakfast realy good. Clean. Lots of free parking space. The campsite below (not part of the hotel) makes it a little more lively (in spring and summer)
Onyado Tsutaya is close to a Ryokan regarding service; the staff is super attentive and helpful, the entrance is quite charming and the public bath is nice. I selected the cheapest room but the window faced towards the river, which I consider a plus.
Food was good, just a tad under Ryokan quality and flavour, but plentiful.
The location is OK, 12min away from the station, but the city is not that big anyways.
There are two parking spots in front of the building.
Good location with walkable access to restaurants. Nice river and city view. Excellent helpful staff who do their best with speaking English to foreigners. Parking spots in front of the building were helpful. Interesting history as a historic business along the nakasendo.
Right in the centre by the railway.
Nothing seems to be too much for the owner, valet parking et al!
Public baths with a view and everywhere was spotlessly clean.
Unfortunately we were too late booking a premium room and dinner, I'd suggest doing this.
Breakfast was a proper meal. Be prepared!
