Hongu
This guesthouse is located along one of the Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes and Yunomine Hot Spring, said to be one of the oldest hot springs baths in Japan, is a 5-minute walk from the property.
There are 2 indoor hot springs baths and an open-air bath at the property.
Amazing spot! Staff is kind and welcoming! We loved the location in Yunomine Onsen, we enjoyed the private onsen experience and we loved the community environment at the hostel and meeting wonderful people each day with our bento box dinners. We were grateful for vegan dinner options!! We also enjoyed the delicious rice porridge in the morning. The kitchen is also wonderful and well stocked-we made our lunches there.
The space itself is beautiful and the way they created the bunks in private cubes adds privacy. The futons are comfortable. We stayed 2 nights. It was a great place to stay along Kumano Kodo and we were able to take the bus to Koguchi to do more hiking one day. The bus stop is less than 5min walk!
Would highly recommend.
Kawayu Onsen, Tanabe
Located just 12 km from Hosshinmon Oji Shrine, Minshuku Sumiya features accommodation in Tanabe with access to an open-air bath, a bar, as well as a housekeeping service. This 2-star ryokan offers a spa experience, with its hot spring bath and public bath. The ryokan provides rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. Great experience, they lent us shovels and yukata to dig our own onsen in the river in front. The food was incredible, with much variety, even though we asked for vegetarian options (breakfast + takeaway bento)
Tanabe
Hotel Kirinosato Takahara features outdoor and indoor hot spring baths, only a 2-minute walk from the World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes. It offers free Wi-Fi throughout the property, a terrace and rooms with a Japanese interior and Western beds. Everything about the stay was fantastic. Very nice view from the room, excellent food, both breakfast and dinner, and best of all was the owner and the staff that were very friendly and helpful.
Hongu
Situated in lush nature, Ashita-no-Mori features hot spring baths, a Western restaurant and comfortable rooms boasting river views and sofas. The cosy inn is located right in front of a river bank boasts 70 degree natural hot spring, and has a souvenir shop and drinks vending machines. We booked this place in a last minute attempt to hike some of the Kumano Kodo. Booking individual accommodations along the trail turned out to be mission impossible, so we decided to stay here and do day trips. Couldn't be happier with this decision. The hosts here are the loveliest people, the location is great and the inn itself has got a special charm to it. Great (vegetarian) breakfast too. It was easy enough to reach directly from Koyasan (bus stop basically in front of the building) and the day trips we did were hiking back from Koguchi to the inn, and Hongu Taisha Mae - Hosshinmon-oji - Yunomine Onsen and back. Both very easily doable but taking the bus in the morning. Then when you return from the hike you can enjoy the river either hot or cold. Magical place!

I hardly find a Japanese style TATAMI room for single person anywhere else inJapan. Some rooms haven’t a shower but you can use ONSEN ( hot springs). The ROTEN BURO ( outside hot springs) is cosy but beautiful. They provide japanese wears after having a hot spring. Hotel Staff provided great service.

There is a coffee shop and bar. The bed and breakfast is located in a geothermal area, with a number of hot springs nearby for guests to relax in.
The hosts were a very warm and helpful couple. The breakfast was beyond terrific. The room was clean as was the shower and bathroom. The hosts were very helpful setting up taxis, recommending a restaurant, and arranging attendance in a yoga session at the Buddish temple Nextdoor. Is someone doesn't require their own private toilet or shower, I would recommend this B&B. By the way, the food was very healthy.

Absolutely authentic ryokan and hot spring experience.
Well located next to the hiking trail. We arrived late after sunset and left early, so can’t say much. The rooms were very clean, the showers are private onsen which was nice. They provide some basic dinner and porridge for breakfast which was very kind.
Lovely hotel staff, perfect location, great traditional Japanese hot spring. Quality-price is great.
Very nice place. Close to the public onsen and bus station. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms are traditionally decorated and very clean which I really liked. The private onsen are also a highlight! Highly recommended.
Amazing accomodation with very clean and nice Japanese rooms and private onsens. Best treatment after a big hike!
The indoor gendered onsen was really good and of a very soothing warm temperature. The outdoor onsen is mixed gendered so doning the bathing suits provided at the indoor onsens, families could onsen together and bask in the outdoor stoney river sights.
It is very clean! And right across from the station. The individual bed sections offer great privacy. The onsen (hot springs) across the train station is great. There is plenty to see in this "maguro" city! Great WiFi.
A good hostel, in a good location (though Yunomine onsen is not that big). It had a nice tatami common area that even had a few games provided, such as go. The hostel had its own private hot springs, that are free to use: a lovely outdoor bath, a relatively big indoor bath and a rather small indoor bath. We had booked a private room, not big but fine with three persons. We received bento boxes for dinner and you could grab rice for free. There was also free rice porridge for breakfast. Overall very good value for the price.
This is an exceptional place! If you are hiking the Kumano Kodo trail this accommodation is very well located. The owner was super friendly and prepared a fabulous dinner and breakfast. The accommodation was very clean and quiet and the atmosphere was very calm and relaxing, plus there was a private Onsen at the accommodation - Exactly what you needed after a long day of hiking.
A welcoming and cosy place in a beautiful spot where you can dig your own hot spring in river banks, whilst also having two private onsen to boot.
