We stayed in a self-service cabin with a bathroom and it was very beautiful. Once you enter the cabin you smell the tatami mats, and it feels like you're in a Studio Ghibli film.
Despite being in nature, there is a convenience store a short walk away.
Note that you have to take away your waste and there are no bins on site. Towels are not provided but can be requested for a small additional fee. This is all explained by the owner prior to arrival.
Onyado Shikishima-kan offers a sauna and free private parking, and is within 32 km of Kitahamaebisu Shrine and 34 km of Takamatsu Heike Monogatari Historical Museum.

Asan Katonomi is truly a tranquil and amazing place to stay. I stayed in both "Deluxe Twin Room with Tatami Area and Open-Air Bath Type F" and "Cottage Type H" with my family. The food is very well prepared, delicious and unique. The staff, especially the butler, in the hotel is attentive and very polite. I have to give special compliments to the staff -- 春田燕 Tsubame Haruta. She made our stay extra memorable and enjoyable. She was very attentive to details and thought for us, customers, before we were aware of our needs. Couldn't be more thankful to be supported and served by her during our stay.
The rooms of the hotel are cosy, clean and supported with very thoughtful service. For "Deluxe Twin Room with Tatami Area and Open-Air Bath Type F", there are two sleeping area in the room, one with beds and one with tatami. The open-air bath in Type F is absolutely enjoyable and relaxing. It's simply mesmerizing to look up to the starry sky while having a hot bath there. The elderly and the kids in our group loved the room. The bathroom is linked to the open bath area, you can go outside for the bath directly after shower. The bathroom amenities are well equipped.
For Cottage H, it is less luxurious than Type F, but it's worth staying too. There is a room with beds and tatami avaialble in the living room. there is a balcony with table, chairs and arm-chairs. The cottage is closer to nature than Type F and its further away from the main building. Need to walk up hill for the place, but the hotel has a golf cart to help transport the luggage (and passengers!) uphill. You can call for the service in advance and they come very quickly. It's impressive that there are bottles of free fresh milk delivered to the special mail box every morning for the residents. Scrumptious and fresh milk! There is no onsen in the Cottage, but you are entitled to book a private spa in the speciall room in the middle hill.

Perfect location less than a minute from the stairs to the shrine. Only a 10 minute walk to the train. Loads of shops line the stairs. The hotel itself was exceptional: staff, facilities, onsen, restaurant, room - all were absolutely top notch. One of our best stays in Japan!

Might be a bit old but it was a really nice experience to be able to stay in such a traditional ryokan. The interior was also very well kept and tidy. The hosts were really welcoming and helpful even though we arrived really late.
Featuring traditional Japanese hot springs known as ‘onsen’, these hotels allow you to take a relaxing soak in therapeutic geothermal waters. Traditionally, onsens were located outdoors but a number of hotels also offer indoor facilities for private or shared use. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with ‘kuroyu’ black water known for its positive effects on skin.
Great location to escape the city crowds. The private onsen was great for our family to enjoy the experience together rather than in the gender segregated public onsen. The food at dinner was high quality and authentic for the region. Close to some great nature. We went swimming in the river which was welcome after sweltering in the city for days. Facilities were great. Very clean. Attentive staff.
The public bath - hot spring onsen - is sinply amazing. Staff is super helpful so no need to be affraid as a foreigner. What an amazing night of great dreams I had after the onsen relaxation. Breakfast is also superb and they even pick you up at the train station.
Very clean and good atmosphere. We were alone most of the time , but for us that was fine :) good facilities and we looooved the Onsen next door. It is perfect location if you wanna explore the surrounding landscape with sites such as iya valley and aragami factory ! Also staff was super friendly and helped us with anything .
Very friendly owner and staff and the food was great! We stayed two nights and got completely different meals for dinner, which were both fantastic. You can go to the next door hotel for nice open-air onsen and mention the ryokan and get a discounted entry ticket, and the onsen is really nice.
This is a beautiful and unique hotel. The staff were very kind and accommodating. We loved our room - one of the traditional rooms - the staff enter the room at dinner to make up the traditional beds on the floor. The dinner we had was absolutely amazing too, and so was breakfast. Our room had a stunning view over the valley and was really spacious. The onsen itself is very relaxing and it is a cool experience getting to go down via cablecar. The indoor onsen is also wonderful.
Brilliant, traditional style Ryokan with outdoor onsen with breathtaking views. You are taken to the onsen by a small cable car which adds to the unique experience.
