The breakfast is extraordinary, we are talking about a real Japanese breakfast.
But dinner... dinner is an event in itself, nine courses, carefully designed down to the last detail. There will be dishes you won't know whether to touch or just look at.
The location is exceptional, buildings surrounded by forest with a landscape design that surpasses everything you can see in the photos, I have traveled to Italy, France, etc, and this is the most incredible private garden I have ever seen in my life.
In fact the entire building is like a museum. Anyone who might complain about "the bed" or "it looks old" is mistaken, is choosing the wrong place, that person may need a Hilton or another typical chain hotel. This is a building that is considered a heritage site in Japan.
And the staff, the staff also exceeds all expectations of friendliness. We travel with two children, including one of 5 years, and it is not normal for so many attention, such as bringing a blanket - without asking for it - in case the child was cold during dinner.
Sanyo-so was the best part of one of the best trips of our lives.
EDIT.
I just found that the Sanyo-so garden was designed by Japanese garden artist Jihei Ogawa, several of his works are registered by the government as an Important Cultural Property.
And many of the buildings were designed by architect Togo Murano -recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit, considered equivalent to the highest rank (Grand Cordon) of the Order of the Rising Sun-.
So no, this is NOT just any building, it is not a building for those looking for a typical Hilton, it is a masterpiece of Japanese design.

The breakfast and dinner meals were amazing! Always on time! The amount of thought that goes behind the presentation and delivery of dishes was unbelievable. We felt like royalty. The level of service was excellent. I always left the dining room feeling full and happy with the meals. Also really liked the complimentary drinks in the main lobby area.

Overall
The hotel was absolutely incredible. A great ryokan experience with extremely friendly and courteous staff who often went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. We were served by Sora Tatebayashi who was absolutely incredible and extremely helpful and everyone at the hotel was friendly and thoughtful. If you are looking for a great ryokan experience with amazing onsens and facilities, I highly recommend Hotel Tenbo and make sure to get the room with the mountain view!
View and location
A truly breathtaking view of Mt Fuji from our room. Highly recommended to stay in the room with the mountain view. The location was great and was very close to the Izu panorama park and the hotel also offers drop off and pick up at Igu Nagoaka Station.
Staff and service
The service at the hotel was excellent and the staff were always keen to help and were so thoughtful and always willing to go above and beyond to deliver the best service possible, which was truly appreciated.
Komatsuya Hachinobo offers guests total relaxation with open-air hot spring baths for public and private use, swimming pool and massages. Free WiFi is available at the lobby.
Featuring traditional Japanese hot springs known as ‘onsen’, these hotels allow you to take a relaxing soak in therapeutic geothermal waters. Traditionally, onsens were located outdoors but a number of hotels also offer indoor facilities for private or shared use. The healing properties of each onsen will vary depending on its location, with ‘kuroyu’ black water known for its positive effects on skin.

Very amenable to cycling, I stored my (hired elsewhere) bike.

It was such a fantastic experience - wonderful early breakfast (fish, rice, green tea, salad, other little things and nibbles), outdoor and indoor hot spring baths, clean futon beds, quiet neighbours, free parking and nice restaurants around. Highly recommend staying there if you want to escape busy city life. It’s a very calm and peaceful place! Would love to stay there again, 10/10 :)
This was only our second ryokan experience, so we don't really have a reference for comparison. However, we could barely find any fault with this one. The room was beautiful, spacious and well equipped, as were both onsens. Dinner was delicious, staff was professional and spoke enough English. I definitely recommend taking the dinner option, and coming on time (before 6pm).
Amazing Ryokan - a very large selection of beautiful onsen's open to any guest in the room - there was one in particular that was exceptionally pretty. Staff were extremely nice and attentive. Wonderful place to stay for a short retreat from the city.
Beautiful, authentic, very relaxing stay. Would recommend for couples as it has the opportunity for private onsen baths which were so nice (there are also public onsens). The rooms were really spacious and tea services were provided in the rooms.
The dining experience was really unique with all of the separate dishes and super high quality. The town is small so whilst I'm sure there are other places to eat, there is no need to do that. Also super fun to go to the panorama park and get brilliant photos of Mount Fuji.
The Hot springs itself (men and women) were awesome. The room was very spacious and clean. The breakfast was amazing. Nice clean private seating area to enjoy your breakfast. The staff is amazing. Very polite and efficient. The owner speaks very good English(very helpful for foreigners who don't understand/speak Japanese). Very good parking space. The timings for private reservations for the hot springs are convenient. Very clean toilet and shower area.
A wonderful Ryokan with a giant garden - the room was huge with a nice little private garden and a water stream - the private onsen was ready to jump in and is big enough to enjoy - The installation of the Hotel is unique and you have to be ready to walk some distances - The Staff was really nice and no problem to communicate with - Food is delicious and not in the big quantities as most other Ryokans
The room was large (35m²). The bed was comfortable. There was also plenty of space to open and pack luggage. There was also a seating area with a table.
The toilet and shower is clean and well-maintained.
On weekday nights, the public indoor onsen is almost a private onsen as you get to use it with no other guests around.
The breakfast is good and delicious. I would recommend getting the hotel breakfast as the nearest convenience store is around 15 minutes walk away.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Great Japanese ryokan, all the staffs are excellent especially the lady served my family is exceptional friendly, 10 out of 10 customer services. The food is delicious, the public and private hot springs are beautiful. Highly recommended and will come back
