Shimo-tajiri
Situated in Shimo-tajiri, 38 km from Mount Aso and 1.8 km from Kuju Flower Park, Ginga no Yado Kinoko2seigo features accommodation with free WiFi, air conditioning, a garden and a shared lounge.
The lodge offers a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with free toiletries, a hairdryer and shower. A fridge and kettle are also available.
Everything is amazing. It looks like heaven. Reality is so much better than the pictures. Everything is so beautiful, quiet and green.
I will list some details below that are not included on booking, to help people decide if they wanna visit this beautiful and peaceful place:
1. There is an amazing observatory in the middle of the yard and the owner is an amazing astronomy sensei. During the 3 nights that we spent there, every night there was a star observation and explanation session. Using his high-tech telescope, we were able to observe amazing nebulas (M21, M22 and M27), as well as stars about to become supernovas (+ many other stars). It was for us a unique experience. We did not speak much Japanese but he really tried to do his best to translate using Google.
2. There is a very nice private onsen (hot bath). You just need to reserve a time slot and unlike most places in Japan, you can enjoy the onsen with your partner in quiet and peace.
3. Beautiful hydrangea garden.
4. Very nice huge flower park just near the pension. We did also blueberry picking there.
5. The pension looks a lot like a chalet and there are tons of green spaces, hammocks and you get a lot of privacy.
6. Located in the heart of Aso-Kuju mountains, you can visit the crater of Aso in less than 1h and there are plenty of trails on Kuju and the nearby mountains.
7. Room is huge, so much space compared to any other place we ever stayed in Japan for the last 5 years.
Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Set 41 km from Mount Aso, Kurokawa Mori no Cottage offers a garden, a terrace and air-conditioned accommodation with a balcony and free WiFi.
Kinrinko Lake is 49 km from the lodge, while Higotai Park is 11 km away. The nearest airport is Kumamoto Airport, 55 km from Kurokawa Mori no Cottage.
This is the best place I have ever stayed in OITA. The house is very nice and very cozy. It is very warm and the place is very beautiful! Even my mum and dad who do not normally say anything was very vocal how much they love the place. The owners were very helpful and very warm people too. Just a note that you cannot go here without a car because it is in the middle of the forest. But renting a car and going here was the best decision we have made for our whole Fukuoka trip!

This is my favourite place to stay. You will need a car and if you do, it is so worth it. The lodge is located in a beautiful area. It is quiet, comfortable and cosy. At night you can hear the owls and see the stars. The breakfast is clean, healthy and delicious. This is better than any five star hotel. There is even a private bath to soak in. The owner takes great pride in the place and prepares his meals with care and attention. I am so glad we stayed here for 4 nights. If we come to Aso again, I will not stay anywhere else.
Owner was friendly and helpful to explain how to visit Mt Aso and shared about the nice eateries within walking distance to lodging.
The location was really good. The owner gave me a lot of advisement. I like the wooden house, dinner (Denraku) and sightseeing spots around there. One day’s staying was very short. I will go back someday.
Great location which is close to Greenland amusement park and YouMe town shopping center. Walking distance to local supermarket, we were able to cook meal using the shared kitchen at the Lodge. Shared kitchen is well equipped with basic cooking appliances and very tidy. Highly recommended!
Lovely place with lots of passion put in. The well-furnished wooden house is very cozy - ideal for taking a break on the mountainous area. The private bath is incredible. The host is very welcoming and helped us plan our visits.
