The breakfast was well provided for fruit and cereals but eggs were were almost well cooked and waiting ready to eat! The toaster was not really effective. The main issue was the lack of staff there were many at breakfast but our room was not cleaned until late on may days. The restaurants that were available were unable to accept us though only half full we could only assume the staff were not available. We had pre dinner drinks on one night waiting for our table and found the bar person dealing with two bars at one time with a distance in between! We finally had our drinks served in our room together with apologies for the delay. The staff without reservation were helpful and delightful but it is a very large hotel and needs the level of staff to manage correctly. Our bedroom was as we expected and the only downturn was the beds were very firm and the three pillows so large in one case and too soft in another.

Castanheiro Boutique Hotel, hotel in Funchal

Offering an outdoor pool and spa centre, Castanheiro Boutique Hotel is set in Funchal, 500 metres from Marina do Funchal.

It was our third stay at this wonderful hotel and it never fails to impress. Housed in a beautiful historic building with a very stylish design, which I love, the hotel offers stunning rooms and increadibly friendly staff. We're welcomed with a glass of prosecco, what was very nice gesture. You can feel the attention to detail in every aspect, making guests feel truly cared for. The breakfast was delicious, with the option to order a la carte dishes and wide variety of local fruits, including passion fruits and figs. We had an unforgettable dinner at the Typographia restaurant, which provided an exceptional culinary experience. The rooftop pool is a perfect place to relax on sunbeds after exploring the island, offering breathtaking view of the Funchal skyline, also in the night. We will definately return! Can't wait!

A small, cozy design hotel; perfect location; walking distance to the old town, slightly longer to the cable car station; the hotel is located in the pedestrian area with several restaurants within a few steps from the doorstep of the hotel (we appreciated the evening after a tiring day :-)); very nice and helpful staff (especially at the reception); super healthy breakfast, exactly as much as you need :-)...

Farmers' Market

Funchal’s main market started out in 1940 and still sees shoppers flock to browse its selection of fresh flowers, greeting you as soon as you walk through the entrance. Even if you’re not out to purchase anything, the architecture and ambience alone are inviting. Design buffs will appreciate the azulejo-style Batisttini Faience tiles, complemented by the waft of exotic blooms that fills the air.

The fruit we purchased was very very expensive and indeed I believe we were ripped off, a few (3) bananas, figs and two small Avon’s, charged in excess of €40 Euros, when I challenged the pricing I was told “what do you expect it’s exotic fruit” the items we purchased were far less expensive on the stalls in the town centre! So Beware.

The market is really nice to visit but don't buy fruits here! Sure seeing all this colours and shapes is really tempting but the prices in the market are strictly for tourists and therefore incredibly high!

I was ripped off by one of the sellers.

I was ripped off by one of the sellers. Two ladies selling tropical fruit. The fruit stand was in the name of someone called Francisco Abreu. Basically, they sold me 1kg of bananas at 29,50 euros and 1 kg of passion fruit at 25 euros. I kept the receipt as proof. AVOID STAND 48, please, please. The two ladies were also rude when I tried to confront them. Unfortunately, this event changed/shaped completely my experience there. I left thinking that I would never go back to Madeira. On the other end, at the ground floor I got to buy flowers from this old lady with two sons that were very nice and seemed very honest and trustworthy.

Market itself if nice but this is rather as tourist attraction not the local market when local people usually shop. You can try the fruits however not sure if this is good idea during current Covid-19 issue, as they are using the same spoon to put fruit on your spoon and often touching one to another. Also I did find it not right when buying more than one type of fruits, they were weighing all together and taking average price to charge you for the lot. I mean if one fruit was EUR19 /kg and another EUR23 /kg, they charge average price of EUR22 /kg. So when there is more of the 19/kg in the bag then you are paying more EUR for the cheaper product.

Saturday morning is when the local people will be shopping = lots of authentic activity. In the afternoon the city is very peaceful and the best timing for visiting. If you intend shopping in the market, first have a walk around all the fruit vending stalls and shops to discover where the locals would buy so as to avoid falling prey to the pushy/aggressive sales personnel who are targeting tourists

    We were underwhelmed.

We were underwhelmed. The room where the day's catch of fish are cleaned and gutted was moderately interesting. The rest--two levels of merchants selling over-priced fruits, vegetables, t-shirts and souvenirs-was less varied, less interesting and less "authentic" than almost any mercado or farmers' market in any modrately sized town in Europe or North or South America.
