Skaros
Skaros Rock juts up over a curious patch of land, up towards the sky. Once a fortress, and the island’s capital, the uniquely formed peninsula hasn’t escaped the damage caused by earthquakes. The result is a craggy form with an unobstructed lookout that‘s arguably the best of the whole caldera. Follow the path to the rock’s tip to see the orange-tinted sky dissolve into the night.

Follow the trail around the left side of Skaros to explore the Mother of Lord Theoskepasti Holy Orthodox Church on the far west side of the rock. Magnificient views. The hike is safe and the path is well defined.

This was definitely a highlight of my trip while in Santorini.
The walk to remains of an old fortress called Skaros is not overly difficult, but if you decide to climb it, you will actually need to climb hands and feet at 90 Degree angles to get to the top of the rock and this can get a little bit tricky. Wear proper footwear and you’ll be fine.
There is a pile of rocks forming an arch you have to climb up to get to the very top. The effort of getting to the top is well worth it, with great views in all directions. Take care on top, however, as there are some holes in the ground dropping into what must be the cellars of old buildings. I enjoyed it so much I climbed it twice and would do it every day if I stayed longer. I even had the whole top completely to myself for quite a while enjoying the most beautiful sunset.
There is also a narrow rocky bridge that divides the front part of the rock and I would not recommended if you are not 100% confident. I crawled over, but only because I do this a lot on my travels and felt confident. This is not for social media snap, this is me challenging myself as I have a huge love for climbing. It is not for everyone and do think before you decide to go for it. Enjoy and stay safe:)

The footpath around the tip of the rock is very good and easy to walk, but getting to the very top is by pure rock climbing, and frankly you don’t see anything different to what you have already seen when walking just underneath it.
If you really want to go for it, avoid light dresses and flip-flops, you will struggle, trainers and shorts will serve you much better.
I would recommend that instead of exhausting yourself conquering that rock and breaking all your nails in the process, you continue following the path to the opposite side and finding a magnificent little church, hidden from the view of the main island. It is absolutely worth going down to see it, not the same as just looking from above. Very atmospheric and breathtakingly beautiful when you get there!

Despite the horrible weather we experienced while at Santorini, I had a great stay at Thea Apartments. Breakfast was served to us in our room at the time we requested and was delicious. Thea, Georgia, and staff were all friendly and accommodating. We had the hot tub to ourselves that we enjoyed while there despite cold temperatures. Location was perfect-right next to Skaros Rock and close to both Oia and Fira (although we renter a vehicle).
Location: excellent - view right in front of Skaros rock, the stunning sunset whilst Fira is a few walks away and Oia is couple hours trail away while enjoying the magnificent view of Aegean sea.
Room: wonderful - color coordination of furniture and decor. Kitchenette with cleaning supplies.
Staff: awesome - Georgia (upgraded our room, yay!) and her staff are welcoming & friendly. They helped us carry our 4 luggage. Ευχαριστώ (Thank you)!
Wonderful location in Imerovigli! The room was clean and spacious with a deck and hot tub overlooking the caldera. Steps to many restaurants and trail to Skaros Rock. Beautiful sunset view with hot tub.
Greg, our host was fantastic! He was very responsive to our email and on site requests, for port transfers, car rental and early breakfasts. I would highly recommend this property!!
Excellent location at the highest point in Santorini with fabulous sunsets overlooking the caldera and Skaros rock. Staff is superior and very responsive to needs. In room drinks and dining were great with reasonable prices if one wishes to stay in after sunset. 30 minute walk to Fira on path just below hotel and about 2 hour walk to Oia.
Spectacular location and view from balcony (immediately off the path from Fira to Oia, and a few minutes from Skaros Rock trail. Room was small, but sufficient to house a family of 4 comfortably. Made-to-order breakfast was delivered to the room and was outstanding. Owner was very friendly, attentive and informative.
The view from the hotel is breathtaking! The location is perfect, the Skaros Rock is right in front of the hotel. The complimentary breakfast is very yummy and full of choices. The hotel is very nice to gave us a complimentary bottle of Santorini wine and a plate of fruit when we arrive.
Friendly staff, incredible views, delicious breakfast, private pool and it was such a quiet spot in comparison to Fira. Perfect waking distance to the main square, bus stop is around the corner, and walking distance to some great sunset bars/restaurants. Also Skaros rock is a very walkable distance for a hike and great views.
Incredible location and view. Imerovigli is actually the highest village and central on the caldera edge. Yet it’s less crowded than Fira or Oia. It also has the Skaros rock. So an amazing place to stay. Nice cave room but small bathroom.
The village of Imerovigli is quiet and beautiful, and far less touristy than other parts of Santorini. Our spacious suite was very comfortable. The made-to-order breakfast was delivered to our room each morning at the time we requested. This is a great location if you are interested in doing the Fira-Oía hike. We were able to do it in two parts Imerovigli to Oía on one day and Imerovigli to Fira the other day. Skaros Rock is very close and can be done very easily from the hotel. We used the Avocado Restaurant location as our pickup point.
