Roman Theatre

A spectacular symbol of Mérida’s past, the Roman Theatres wasn’t always so well known. Almost completely buried for centuries, this now-iconic landmark was finally unearthed in 1910. Today its 2000-year-old marble columns and statues have been restored to their former glory, and the ancient stage is the setting for productions of Greek and Roman plays during the city’s annual summer theatre festival.
