The hotel building is a historical building with a long history. It is a beautiful and well maintained old building. Our hotel room was spacious and very comfortable with all the modern necessities, We were also given yummy treats of cookies and black vinegar (a speciality of Datong and Pingyao). Breakfast was very good and the serving was big. The location of hotel is very good cos it is near the West Gate and the historical buildings and restaurants are all within walking distance in the old city. The staff at the hotel are just excellent. Alice the manager is such a vibrant, knowledgeable and helpful lady who speaks very good english.

Hotel is not crowded. I only saw one guest throughout my one day stay
The next day, I got up early and I was able to walk the entire city (no crowds)

The hotel does not have a restaurant, however one is not needed; there are numerous restaurants in the city. I ordered from Meituan.
Breakfast the next day was simple but more than enough for me: toast, jelly, fried egg and bacon. There are also numerous options for breakfast in the city.
I enjoyed my stay very much, will definitely stay again.
Tours that you can take: Wang’s Courtyard is 30 minutes by car and Zhangby’s Fortress is about 30 minutes from Wang’s Courtyard.
Traveling tips: To get to Pingyao by train:
Beijing to Pingyao: only a few times per day (This is the best option if you are coming from Beijing)
Otherwise:
Beijing to Pingyao or Shanghai to Pingyao Air China
Taiyuan to Pingyao: Rake the fast train that is ~ 30-40 minutes. Business class is 56 rmb
Coming back to Beijing (If you miss direct train to Beijing)
-Pingyao rail station to Taiyuan South. ( Do not get off on Taiyuan station, you must to go Taiyuan South) I got off the wrong station and had to take a taxi to Taiyuan South which is about 15 minutes with light traffic
Taiyuan South to Beijing: 3 hours by fast train.

Dinner in the hotel was perfect and delicious. They even offered gluten free food!
The owner family were very friendly and supported us in any situation.

The staff was so kind and happy all the time, they helped me a lot and they speak English, which is pretty rare in China, even in some hotels. They gave me a map and recommended some places, also asked a taxi for me for the next day that I had my train to Beijing in the morning. The shared dorm was clean, had shampoo, air conditioner, clean sheets, futon, and pillow. Also curtains for privacy. I enjoyed my stay a lot. They even gave me a little souvenir on my way out and free water. Thank you for a very pleasant stay. Amazing price and just five minutes walking from North Gate of the old city. Supermarket right on the corner.

Beautiful ancient city, and you still can feel the daily normal leaving of its inhabitants. Liked the most to have 99.9999% chinese tourist at this time of the year, Mid March. Only 4 westerners encountered. Chinese History at its best. Lots of historical places to visit and learn from ancient China. Unmissable for local and foreigner travellers.

Incredibly beautiful town, totally made up of traditional Chinese architecture (at least on the main streets). You can buy a ticket that allows entry into many of the sites, including the Draft Bank, Temple of the City God, Confucius Temple and so many more, and then spend a day wandering around exploring them as you come across them. (Note that some of the smaller ones have almost no English signs, so it can be difficult to know what they are!). We bought the ticket from a window nearby (1 minute east) of the draft bank, but there may be other places. It's also interesting to go up the City Walls and see the town from above.

Fantastic historic walled town where you can easily escape the tourist area. Very very unique however Pollution was a big problem during our stay as it is in the midde of a huge area full of factories. We spent the 2 days with our masks on.

We visited in November so starting to get chilly at night. The numerous museums are interesting and give a good idea of times past. Great food in town but one or two restaurant and shop owners give more hustle than we'd like. Not too many tourists at the time we visited and we pretty much had the whole wall to ourselves. The old town is a comfortable size to walk around over 2 days. The 3 day "tourist pass" is well worth the price we paid.

For dinner: a little bit away from the busy street you will find cheaper option. Or just try some small bites here and there.

We were there for 2 nights, 2 days.
We were there for 2 nights, 2 days. We arrived Friday at about 6pm and enjoyed walking around the old city, had a "fish in tank nibbling off dead skin off our feet" experience! Saturday we took a taxi to Wang's Family Compound, 50 km away. This is well worth doing - we took 3 hours to viist the compound which reminded us of a cross betwen the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.... On the way back we stopped at Shuanglin Temple - we only had 30 minutes there before it closed but it was more than enough - and I'd say this is very missable. Saturday evening we went to the excellent 20 minute 8pm laser show where they project historic scenes of Ping Yao onto the outside southern City Wall and the Yingxun Gate. Worth watching. Sunday we walked round some of the main historic sights including the Ancient Government Building, Ri Sheng Chang & the Residence of Ma's Family - all recommended.
Very great location and more than anything great and helpful staff, an always smiling and friendly kitchen chef :) and the owner helped us to arrange tickets to the Youjian Pingyao show (don't miss it!), Breakfast was basic Chinese breakfast but good, and we had dinner in the restaurant every night. We were afraid that we would get back pain from the beds (Kang Style bed means a brick / wood underground and a thin mattress), but unless you have severe back problems, you'll sleep well here.
Staying at the Pingyao Ji Family Courtyard Inn was rather magical.The staff free upgraded my room. Every time I exited or returned she immediately came outside and asked if I needed anything. The staff speak English so well made my trip easier. It's a special place.
A fantastic location with a team of friendly staff. As it was winter, the place was generally quiet. However, the walls are thin and you could hear the noises from the corridor. Rooms were clean and cosy. Had a pleasant stay at the hotel. Great place!
Typical hotel in a fairly central location. The staff was very friendly. The value for money was good. The bed is traditional. I recomended this hotel for a traditional experience in this village.
