Zermatt is the perfect small mountain town. Lots of nearby hiking and very good lifts up into the mountains. On a clear day the views are spectacular. The nearby gorge is also a great place to hike and view nature. Ate at the Brown Cow—excellent burgers.

After visiting Zermatt for a week in January to ski we returned at the beginning of September to get an appreciation of The Alps in late summer / early autumn for 3 nights 4 days. And it did not disappoint. We had all weather from 25 degrees and sunny (in the town) to -1 and a snow storm (at Glacier Paradise). Mostly combustion engine free you get around Zermatt by walking. Alternatively there are electric taxis or a free electric shuttle bus. Take the train up to Gornergrat and the cable cars to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Both pricey but worth it. Our tip would be to get the Peak to Peak pass. If you pay for a 2 or 3 day pass you will get unlimited access to both of these (instead of just one return journey) and all the other open trains, gondolas and cable cars and then you can do as much or as little hiking / walking around the mountain trails as you wish. Still not cheap but the best value for money by far.

Zermatt is, in a word, magical.
Zermatt is, in a word, magical. It boasts the iconic Matterhorn, which enthralls visitors, and the village, though getting larger by the year, is still so charming and historic. You can walk all over town in less than half an hour. There are no cars, no parking lots, no traffic - heaven. You do have to dodge the zippy electric delivery carts that careen along the streets, but that's part of the fun. The lift tickets are expensive but worth every penny - once you get up to the higher areas, the views are spectacular. The best thing is to hike or ski the trails to lunch at one of the many mountain huts along the way. Be careful researching accommodations in Zermatt, as many places are a challenging uphill walk - the further toward the edges of town a place is, the higher on a hill it's likely to be, as the Zermatt valley is narrow and steep. However, some newer places have put in elevators that take you up to their place.

An amazing place as a base for mountain hikes, easily accessible by cable car or train. Even those who are less mobile or do not have the necessary physical fitness can thus have an experience and views that is generally reserved for those who have earned these experiences by an often challenging climb with great elevation.
A combination of cable car use and mountain hiking seems ideal. It can easily happen that if you miss the most famous places, you will hardly meet a few people on the hike and you can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature without selfie hunters running around.

The Matterhorn is breathtaking.
The Matterhorn is breathtaking. There's a reason it's the symbol of The Alps.
The town itself is quaint, clean and very expensive - as you'd expect for Switzerland.
It's also car free but you can get golf buggy taxis around if you're not a big walker.

Clean and spacious house, perfect location, wonderful view, and the best host I’ve ever met. Peter was very helpful when we needed something.
We were in Zermatt for skiing. 6 minute walk to Sunnengga, 10 minute walk to Gornergrat, and 2 minute bus ride to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise trains. Kitchen is well equipped and Migros and Coop are closed by. Modest yet highly effective Sauna and steam room were worth to mention. Good for the muscles after a ski day.
Everything! From the room, location, staff, food! It is the best hotel I stayed in Switzerland! I wanna specially mention for Lucas and Natalie for making my proposal a very successful one! They are the brands and staffs that the hotel should value!
Everything!
The best trip I had to Switzerland
