Mussels! The season starts in September, yet there were places which served big and juicy mussels. The Stadcafe was the best, it's close to the Grote Markt and serves mussels with vegetables, sauce and a big pile of Belgian (not French) fries.
The Grote Markt and the cathedral are beautiful and old, the little streets in the city center are lovely. There's a very old castle on the river side as well.
