Nestled in the heart of Baton Rouge, Home is located in a quiet neighborhood where the locals are welcoming and hospitable. The capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is based alongside the Mississippi River. Originally founded by French settlers as a military post in 1719, Baton Rouge was named for a red cypress tree stripped of its bark. The tree was a marker that showed the boundary between Houma and Bayou Goula hunting grounds. The tree was named "Red Stick," thus, "Baton Rouge."Baton Rouge has significant historical importance thanks to its position on the Istrouma Bluff, the first natural bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta at the Gulf of Mexico. Today, Baton Rouge is known for the castle-like Old Louisiana State Capitol Museum, Magnolia Mound Plantation, LSU Rural Life Museum, and USS Kidd. Louisiana State University, located in Baton Rouge, has kept a live tiger as its mascot since the 1930s. Neither purchased nor bred, LSU takes in tigers in need of a sanctuary home. Its current mascot, Mike, came to LSU in 2017 and can be seen in an enclosure attached to the LSU Football Stadium, known as the Death Valley.
