This property has been in our family for generations and we are passionate about it! We did the renovations to retain the buildings' charm while achieving the best comfort level for our guests. Property information

The Herdade de Alagães is located in southern Portugal, Alentejo, between the Castro Verde IBA Biosphere Reserve and the Guadiana Valley Natural Park and only 18 km from the lovely historical town of Mértola, whose roots go back to classical antiquity. We are dedicated to sustainable tourism, nature conservation and agroforestry. We have two types of accommodation: three rooms and a villa. The rooms were originally barns, and these buildings were restored keeping the rammed earth (taipa) walls, the traditional technique in Alentejo, while adding a bathroom to each room. The wood-oven house was repurposed as a small support kitchen for the guests (there is a fridge and a microwave). Near the rooms there is a small pool and an outdoor space where you can lounge and take your meals. The yard contains a native hedge, several fruit trees and many herbs. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in the Villa, a separate two-bedroom house with a living room, kitchen, terraces and small private pool. We accept pets only in the larger rooms (Villa and Double/Twin room), not in the Double Rooms. Please confirm in advance.

Neighbourhood information

The rooms are located in a large courtyard at the edge of a small, traditional Alentejo village. You have around 265 ha to explore on foot or bike, less than 100m from the rooms. There is a stone pine forest, pastures, olive groves, a stream and a couple of ponds. João Serra is a birding hotspot on eBird!
