Boavista Guest House is located between "Santos" and "Cais do Sodre" neighborhoods Santos is known for its design shops, its design and architecture schools, and for bars and clubs that attract college students and teenagers. But it's also a neighborhood of grand mansions, just like the residential Lapa district up the hill. It was here that many aristocrats and noble families lived in the 18th century, and many of their homes have now been turned into hotels and embassies (the best examples are on Rua do Sacramento à Lapa and on Rua das Janelas Verdes). Behind Largo de Santos (Santos Square) are the narrow streets of the tiny and picturesque neighborhood of Madragoa, which, together with Alfama, was home to Lisbon's fishwives and fishing community. Today it's a neighborhood known for its traditional taverns and "petiscos" (tapas) restaurants, and for its many tiled façades. Cais do Sodre Cais do Sodre was known for decades as the city's "red light district," with bars named after northern European capitals to attract their sailors who stepped off the boats nearby. It's now a seedy-chic street lined with hip bars and clubs, quite popular at night.
