Redwood is a gracious early 1900s bungalow recently refurbished to a boutique standard. Set on parklike grounds amongst dairy country midway between Thames and Paeroa, the property offers dark night skies and peaceful nights. A small stargazer cabin is situated on site with binoculars provided plus cool books on space. The house provides three bedrooms, all with high stud ceilings and delicious decor. The house features a glorious six foot claw-foot bath with shower over, a farmhouse kitchen with dining table centre stage, as well as a second dining area in the former sunroom, now breakfast room. This room is especially sunny and opens to the front deck which provides two seating areas and a canvas awning. Artwork adorns most rooms with the fabulous Frida Kahlo centre stage in the living room. Colin McCahon features in the double room whilst asbstract embroidery hangs in the single room and living room. The decoration is fresh and inviting with a predominance of white with polished sanded matai floors with the back porch, laundry and breakfast room gloriously sunny in Resene Pirate Gold. The back yard is framed by deciduous trees which provide welcome shade in the midst of summer with a wooden deck with seating and umbrella provided off the back of the dwelling here. There is plenty of parking down the concrete strip drive and a vegetable garden to one side. Bike storage is available beneath the carport which is located to the east end of the garage. A hose for washing down bikes hangs off the back deck. Tenting is not allowed.
Welcome to Redwood. We created this space with ourselves in mind. It is exactly the sort of property we like to stay in when we take off on our cycle touring holidays. We lived here for 32 years and know every inch of the house and the property. As you can see we love gardening, art and peace and quiet. We have every confidence that Redwood will live up to your expectations as a holiday destination.
Set on parklike grounds amongst dairy country midway between Thames and Paeroa, the property is well positioned as a base for riding the Hauraki Rail Trail. One day might be spent exploring the fantastic history of Thames only 13 kilometres to the north, and another might be exploring the many antique shops of Paeroa, only 23 kilometres to the south. Another day trip is to Miranda where our godwits hang out from September until returning to Alaska in March. You might want to stay at Miranda Holiday Park for the night as it has very nice hot pools. Other over-nighters are to Waihi and Te Aroha. Matatoki, meaning stone adze, lies on the easternmost side of the Hauraki Plains below the Coromandel Ranges. The Waihou River, which Captain James Cook rowed up in a longboat, separates it from the bulk of the Plains and places it firmly in the Thames Coromandel District. The Matatoki portion of the railway was constructed in May 1887 as part of the Thames to Paeroa line and the local quarries used the line for some years. The last day of commercial service was 28 June 1991 and it is this line that is now used for the Hauraki Rail Trail. Matatoki provides Matatoki School, a butcher, a cheese maker and cafe, as well as a quarry. Redwood is located 112 kilometres south east of Auckland, 77 kilometres to Matamata (which the bike trail extends to), 100 kilometres to Tauranga, 64 kilometres to Coromandel, 29 kilometres to Kaeaeranga Valley road end, the start of the famous Pinnacles Walk. As you can see, Redwood is well located as a base for hiking, biking and exploring the Coromandel Peninsula to the north and the Waikato to the south.
