Grandads Cottage 298 is a Home-Stay built in the 1950's. It has 2 bedrooms and '298' is the street number. It backs onto the Whanganui River. The Double Room, 'Cottage Yellow Door' has a double bed. The Double or Twin Room 'Cottage Red Door' has a double bed with a single loft bed above the double. ALL OTHER FACILITIES ARE SHARED... You can relax in the lounge with a piano and large TV or interact with the hosts or other guests. WIFI is free of charge. Cook your meals in our well equipped kitchen or try the cafes in town. There is a continental breakfast available in the morning. Check in is late afternoon around 5 PM. Later arrivals please send text/email with your ETA. There is no strict time for check out. We now have 2 'Off The Grid' experiences with solar panels, batteries, invertor, USB charging, gas califont and lights. Your hosts are Ian & Hana Robertson. Ian is a 'kiwi' and was born and raised in Hamilton. Hana was born in the Czech Republic and has been in New Zealand since June 2006. Ian is a professional pianist and has being playing at the Chateau Tongariro, an iconic kiwi hotel, for 9 years. Hana is a professional ski instructor and works on Mt Ruapehu. They both have a good knowledge of the area and can help plan your choice of activity or directions to your next destination.

Taumarunui has 3 supermarkets, the biggest being New World. There are a number of cafe/restaurants and take-a-ways including McDonald's and a new pizza outlet. Our cottage is situated in Manunui, 6 km's south of Taumarunui. Manunui has a Challenge Petrol Station with good take-a-ways. It is a good starting point for; * Tongariro Crossing * Canoeing the Whanganui River * Forgotten World Rail Trail * Forgotten World Highway * Whakapapa Ski Field * Timber Trail * Bridge to Nowhere From Grandads Cottage 298 boundary you can walk into the Whanganui River and start fishing for trout. You will need a license. There is a great small walk starting 1km from GC298 called the Manunui River Walkway. It is around 3km long and includes sidewalks within the native tree reserve area at the western end of the walkway. You can also bike this walkway. In the same area there are polo cross fields which have an 18 hole Disc Golf course. We a also have a basket at GC298 where you can practice your putting skills.
