De Krukel and De Boem are owned by Beatrijs Smulders and Roel van Dalen. Beatrijs is an well-known midwife and founder of the Birth Centre Amsterdam. For decades, Beatrijs has been the figurehead of Dutch midwifery, in which home birth holds such an important position. In addition, Beatrijs is a publicist and the author of several bestsellers such as 'Veilig Bevallen' (Safe Childbirth), 'Veilig Zwanger' (Safe Pregnancy) and 'Veilig door de Kraamtijd' (Safe through Childbirth). She is currently working on a new book in her 'Safe' series: 'Safe through the first year after giving birth'. She is also writing a large, autobiographical trilogy about women, sex and love. Beatrijs is married to filmmaker Roel van Dalen. Well-known works of his are documentary series such as 'A Royal Company' about the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, 'The Children of De Hondsberg' about mentally handicapped children and the documentary 'Ajax: There they heard angels singing'. Roel also makes music. His first album 'Altijd gaat voorbij', with self-written Dutch music, was released in 2013 and his 2nd 'Mijn Dag' in 2019. Our two holiday homes on Texel are called De Krukel and De Boem. The gardens of these cottages border each other and are situated at the edge of the woods. Our cottages are located in a central spot on the island. The beautiful beach of Texel is a 15-minute walk away. The place is hidden behind the dunes and the forest, which acts as a large windbreak. Because of this, the sea wind passes high over our spot and it is always as good as windless. This is in contrast to the other side of the island, where it is very often windy. The clouds always blow quickly over the island, which is why Texel has more hours of sunshine than the rest of the Netherlands. At our place, the sunrays feel pleasantly warm early in the year due to the lack of wind. Our cottages are not standard holiday homes. Not high-tech, sleek and modern, but vintage cottages from the 60s, with a homely atmosphere, without the functional, often chilly furnishings that characterise many cottages on Texel. The cottages have a cosy interior, wooden floors and bookcases. Even if you only stay for a few days, we like it when you feel at home in an atmospheric environment. IMPORTANT NOTICE: From mid-December 2024, we will have a new Krukel. The old cottage has been demolished and in its place is an attractive ecological house, fully equipped, much larger and more comfortable than the old one. Also with two bedrooms with large double beds, so suitable for four people. Among all the photos is also a concept photo of what the new house will look like.
