Some of the most stunning coastal scenery in Ireland can be found on Achill Island. The dramatic force of the ocean's power is most evident along the south of the island, best known as the Atlantic Drive. The Great Western Greenway is the longest off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland, stretching for 42 km from Achill to Westport, the most scenic of this being the 13 km section from Achill to Mulranny. The Deserted Village offers a fascinating reminder of life on Achill Island in bygone days. The ruins of approx 80 stone cottages stretch for approx. 1.5 km. The presence of a megalithic tomb nearby indicates habitation some 5000 years ago. Croaghaun mountain is the most westerly point on Achill Island and the location of the highest and most spectacular sea-cliffs in Western Europe. This trek is not for the faint-hearted and will require plenty of time but is well worth the effort.
