As one of the most remote B&Bs in central Dartmoor, the secluded Wydemeet has footpaths in every direction just from the garden gate. Featuring free WiFi and free private parking on site, it is just 20 minutes' drive from the A38 road, which leads to both Exeter and Plymouth. All guest rooms are en-suite and furnished with deep-pile carpets, antiques and original watercolours on the walls. Bathrooms offer luxury toiletries, while bedrooms include 100% Egyptian cotton linen. Guests are welcomed with tea and cake, or a glass of chilled white wine and crisps. Guests can also relax in the garden on a sun lounger, while their children play on the swing and watch the Dartmoor ponies, sheep and belted Galloway cattle roaming outside on the moor. Located in the wildest part of high Dartmoor, Wydemeet is in an area likeable to the Highlands of Scotland. The property offers easy access to outdoor activities such as horse riding, kayaking, fishing, bird watching, and mountain climbing. The market town of Tavistock is a 25-minute drive from the B&B. Home to a famous prison, the village of Princetown is just 4 miles away. Prince Hall Hotel is a 45-minute walk across the moor. Open all day, it provides lunch, tea and dinner.

Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.8 for a two-person trip.

This was genuinley and by a distance the best B+B me and my partner have visited together and we love a long weekend trip. We were so well looked after, with fabulous tips for where to go for dinner, great advice about where to go on our walks,...

The breakfast that Mary prepared was more than we could eat. She was extremely helpfull and kind. We enjoyed being in the middle of nowhere. The house is excellently located in the middle of Dartmoor, to visit the beauty of the National Park.

Fabulous B@B tucked away on the moor. Slept like a baby in the lovely bed. We will be back !

Company information

I bought Wydemeet in 1995 as a 'swap' for my Victorian terraced house in Fulham. That was a scary decision! Prior to that I was working in PR. I also used to be a motorcycle courier, a hand-writing analyst, and I was brought up and educated at Eton College. Wydemeet became the base for many a polar expedition, as together my (sadly now ex) husband and I built up his experience and reputation as a globally renowned explorer. I set up the B&B to make ends meet after he left, to ensure the two children's continued stability, and to pay for their school fees. There are still various polar artefacts dotted about, and both Pen and I have published books about our experiences. Occasionally you will find 'Polar Pen' serving you breakfast! And/or one or other of the children welcoming you, if I am chauffering the other one around the West Country or attending a school event. Wydemeet remains a very happy family home for the three of us, as well as for our two horses and little dog, Twiglet.

Property information

Wydemeet was originally built as a fishing lodge, because we're at the confluence of the Rivers Swincombe and West Dart, which teem with brown trout, seatrout, and salmon. We're in one of the most beautiful, and unknown, valleys in all Dartmoor. Ours is a family home, an oasis in the middle of the Dartmoor wilderness. It is completely private, with large, bright bedrooms and bathrooms looking out across the garden to the moor. You are our guests and we invite you to enjoy our two best spare rooms as part of the family. Each room is very personal and individual. Please don't expect the bland corporate hospitality of a purpose-built guesthouse when you come here. Ours, we believe, is the traditional, old-fashioned kind of B&B. We absolutely love having people at our home, and have no rules about when and where you should be. The one proviso is that you relax and enjoy yourself, so breakfast is served anytime after 9.00am.

Neighbourhood information

You can walk, ride or cycle in every direction across Dartmoor from outside our garden gate. We think our degree of wilderness is unique for Southern England! If you look at a map, we're in the middle of Devon, however we are not a good centre from which to explore Devon and Cornwall as it takes 20 minutes to reach a main road. But we are the best place in the world for experienced hikers!
