About the Stable Studio... Perfect for couples, our bijou studio – sleeps 2 – is in its own private garden at Art and Accommodation at Haroldston House in Upper Solva. The studio has been created out of Haroldston House’s former 18th-century stable for the harbour’s working donkeys and is is accessed through the hall and garden of the Georgian house, down a steep flight of stone steps and through the garden. The feel of the room is very much that of a studio in the garden. The light space with slate floors is full of contemporary art in blues and greens and mid-century furniture; we think it’s the most stylish stable in Solva! It has a mini-kitchenette with dishwasher, wetroom & rainshower, log burner, Wi-Fi and Smart TV. You are welcome enjoy the art in the public spaces of the main house, and browse the guide books and information - as well as use the washing machine and dryer. Our Stable Studio is carbon neutral and we’ll also leave you complimentary ‘starter breakfast’ provisions in the fridge – so you don’t need to worry about shopping before you arrive - as well as some homemade pizza bases if you feel like using the wood-fired pizza oven in the garden. There is free parking available on the forecourt of the main house (with a 3-pin EV charging point), and more in a free public parking area approximately 30m up the road. It is just a few minutes' walk down the hill to the restaurants, pubs, galleries and shops of Solva, as well as the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.
About us... We are artist & editor Ian, and architect & ceramicist Maria, and together we created Haroldston House as the type of accommodation that we would like to stay in. So, we have decorated our former merchant’s residence and its guest accommodation with inspired colours and modern furniture mixed in with mid-century classics – from Eames to Isokon, and Arad to Alessi. We also love art, so our eclectic collection of artworks of 20th-century Welsh and Wales-based artists, along with those of contemporary visual artists living and working in Pembrokeshire today. Ian and Maria’s own work also adorn the studios and public spaces – we hope you enjoy! We live and work on the premises so are generally around if you would like recommendations or suggestions. Otherwise, we will leave you completely to your own devices to enjoy a wonderful holiday in Pembrokeshire.
About Solva... Solva/Solfach is an exceptional spot in Pembrokeshire. Its distinctive, sinuous harbour mouth is a ‘ria’ – a drowned river valley from the Ice Age – whose steep sides and dramatic light contrast with much of south Wales’ gentle coastal scenery. The very name Solva could be Norse, dating from the Viking invasions: Sol Vo meaning ‘sunny fjord’. Immortalised in aquatints by William Daniell (an 18th-century engraver who also captured some of the earliest British views of India), the thriving village traded with Bristol and with Wexford across the Irish Sea. What is now a peaceful cove of bobbing boats was once a heaving industrial settlement (Solva retains its distinctive circular limekilns), a smugglers’ paradise (with its tortuous harbour mouth) and a transatlantic gateway (steamship passages to the USA were briefly sold here in the 1840s for three pounds per adult)! Nowadays, visitors come to walk some of the surrounding Pembrokeshire Coast Path, relax in its pubs and cafes, eat out in great eateries in Lower Solva, or browse its shops and galleries.
