Property information

The Old Post Office in the pretty village of Higham provides a wonderful base to explore the beautiful countryside of Dedham Vale, closely associated with the works of John Constable. The cottage features in his painting, The Stour Valley from Higham. This beautiful timber framed building has lots of space to relax in, with a cosy wood burning stove in the sitting room.

Neighbourhood information

Beyond the parkland of Higham Place, the countryside of Dedham Vale extends with beautiful views which have captivated a number of world renowned painters. Munnings, Gainsborough and Constable all spent considerable periods of time in the area and The Old Post Office is depicted in Constable's painting, The Stour Valley from Higham. There are a number of footpaths from Higham which allow you to access the Stour Valley Path taking you to Dedham and Flatford Mill where you can explore the area that Constable painted in more detail. Slightly further afield, the Munnings Museum is south of Dedham at Castle Hill. Higham sits within the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Suffolk has a wealth of local food producers and many of the restaurants and pubs pride themselves on using seasonal, local produce. If you fancy seeing what is on offer a visit to Hall Farm will give you a good starter. Both the cafe and the farm shop have some tasty treats to try. There are a number of good pub restaurants in Stoke By Nayland including the Angel Inn and The Crown which are worth trying if you are looking for somewhere special to have a meal. Besides exploring the stunning Suffolk countryside there are a number of towns that are worth a visit. Lavenham and Long Melford are both famous for their association with the wool trade. The Lavenham Guildhall is a particularly fine example of a medieval timber framed building. If you have some younger guests with you, head to Colchester Castle to discover over 2000 years of history or Jimmy's Farm for some hands on experience of farm animals.
