The small town of Millom is just a 5 minute drive away, with a tesco supermarket, a convenience store, a petrol station, and a couple of take-away restaurants (Indian: Curry Spice, Chinese: Golden Lotus) and two Fish and Chip shops (Dotties Traditional Fish and Chips or Deano's Plaice). Hodbarrow Nature Reserve is just 10 minutes away, a coastal lagoon and area of grassland which is located on the site of a former iron mine.The reserve is a fabulous place to see a range of wildlife, including breeding terns, ringed plovers, redshanks, oystercatchers and great crested grebes - a protected species that was once almost hunted to extinction. If you continue around the lagoon (a beautiful walk) you'll come to the village of Haverigg, here you'll find a Water Sports Centre, a restaurant on the marina (The Ski Bar) and another highly recommended fish and chip shop. A farm shop and gallery at nearby Bootle (20 minutes away) also offers breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas. Short, beautiful drives take you to Coniston where you can head out of some low level walking suitable for all abilities, or for the keen hikers, Coniston Old Man Mountain is certainly not to be missed. The boating centre in Coniston offers a range of water activities including paddle boarding hire, boat hire and bike hire (electric and mountain bikes), or perhaps you just want to soak up the views at the lakeshore Bluebird Café, offering outstanding views indoors and outdoors. Muncaster Castle is just a short drive away, with a stunning 77 acres of gardens and also home of the World Owl Trust. 5 minutes further along you'll find Ravenglass and Eskdale Narrow Gauge Railway, where you can ride a steam train through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Lake District.
