We had a wonderful afternoon tea booked for when we arrived. Following a family wedding at a nearby venue we returned to the clean and comfortable bed. A really good night 's sleep was followed with a delicious breakfast. Other than the usual breakfast buffet foods there was an extensive choice of cooked items. My husband had a full English and I had eggs Benedict, both were piping hot and delicious.

Bedford is a pleasant town with deep history, but not a lot to show for it. The castle is in ruins. I was serendipitously surprised to find the John Bunyan Museum across the street from my hotel. The writer of Pilgrim's Progress, he is perhaps Bedford's most famous citizen, more even than the medieval Lords and Ladies who resided in the castle. The river walk is beautiful. I watching people sculling on the river. Many people commute from Bedford to London for work.

Bedford has a great museum & art collection at The Higgins & just around the corner is the world famous John Bunyan museum.Sadly the High Street is in decline with the recent proliferation of out of town shopping centres, but the river front Embankment,Russell Park & the site of Bedford Castle make for good walks. The town has some nice cafes & pubs & there is a market in the square on Saturdays-mainly fruit & veg & food. There are other stalls outside Boots selling clothes. On the other side of town is the larger Bedford Park, complete with Victorian bandstand & public swimming pool. Bedford has some lovely architecture & interesting old churches & pubs.
There is a new cinema on the outskirts of town.
For clothes shopping etc Rushden Lakes & Milton Keynes are a short drive away,as are many diverse pretty country village pubs for dinner. There is a large independent book shop in town which is worth a visit.

Bedfords most redeeming features are the River Great Ouse with many walks along the embankment and further, 2 large well managed parks, plenty of history. As a base there are 2 amazing aircraft museums within 30 miles, closest is The shuttlworth collection at Old Warden, a bit further is Duxford Imperial War Museum. There are many other interesting attractions only a short drive away. As well as some really good hotels where quality and service are excellent The Barns for example,

Due to the bitter cold weather it was was not the ideal place although the market was on and I got the wreathes for the church yards and cemetery so it saved me another trip to Bedford , there was a winter wonderland in Bedford park that is the first time I have ever known anything like that to be in the park.

The large parks were very well kept and made for a pleasant walk. There is quite a contrast between some areas, the waterfront area is good but some of the suburb areas are quite run down and you may wish to avoid after dark. Plenty of places to eat out.

A pretty town by the river but the town centre is truly grotty. Walked down the gorgeous d'Parys avenue into convivium of homeless street dwellers noisily drunk and swearing and at least two groups of weed smokers outside St Peters church. The high street was full of very rowdy groups. Then the serene river, along the embankment and up past the museum.
Bedford seems to have two sides, tree lined avenues and riverside and a town centre itself that is in the throes of becoming destitute.
Excellent location for walking into Bedford (appx 5-8 mins)Breakfast was a cook it yourself continental style breakfast, with a Microwave and Toaster facilities. So scrambled eggs and beans on toast type breakfast. The hotel provided the Tea bags, cereals and complimentary cakes and fruit but you have to bring your own milk. I bought my own eggs, ham and beans. Basically buy what you want for breakfast: different!!. Owner called in to chat to make sure everything was ok which was a nice touch.
All the facilities, I have been before and enjoyed my stay there, so this time!
The staff pleasant, attentive and vey helpful as I had a bit of pb with my mobile phone and helped with an another lead from the Hotel.
I lived in Bedford many years ago so it was really great to be in familiar ground again!
I have known the Hotel many many years ago in fact my own mother and a friend stayed there but it wasn't the confort standard it has now with the change of ownership!
We had a lovely stay at this hotel. It was situated perfectly for our visit.....near to the bus station and the train station. The shopping area nearby was very useful. The staff were very nice and having the restaurant/bar on site was extremely convenient. The outside terraces were lovely to sit and have a drink in the evening. The price for this accommodation is very good too. If traveling to Bedford again, I would not hesitate to book The Pilgrims Progress again.
My Nana used to work at D'Parys back in the 50's and so my mom and I wanted to revisit this special place knowing it was still open. They truly exceeded our expectations. The staff were so lovely and the food was amazing! Breakfast was included in our stay and they also have a full restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We did not want to leave this beautiful hotel because we had such a wonderful time! Thank you to everyone that made our trip one to remember!
The room was lovely - very nicely decorated
Great facilities in the room
Very comfortable bed
Very powerful shower
Great location in Bedford - we were visiting the Higgins and it was 3 mins walk away. Lovely view of the river

After a very long day traveling from Skye to Bedford I got a very friendly welcome at the Hotel, The staff were all young (compared to me at least) and enthusiastic, they were having fun whilst looking after their customers well. A lovely ambiance. Special thanks to Noah for a kindly beer that lifted my spirits. I had a brilliant sleep the bed was very comfortable.
Jason who checked me in was a consummate professional, parking was close by and I was expecting to pay but it was free, room was clean and bed comfortable. I was meeting friends in town and it was a 5 minute walk away. I grew up in Bedford and the river is the best part, so you can walk out your hotel and stroll by the river. Overall good value for money.
Convenient to city of Bedford. Supermarket at end of road. Easy to walk around town. Took walk to Embankment and river only 5 minutes away. They didnt serve food but were close to other pubs that did and restaurants. Staff were friendly and quick to respond. Rooms were clean. Beds were comfortable.
The property is in a great location and also once inside, it has probably the best set of facilities compared to all other similar type of short term rental properties in Bedford. The kitchen and bedroom is especially good.
My recent stay at holiday inn Bedford was nothing short of exceptional. The staff's impeccable service and genuine hospitality created a welcoming atmosphere that made me feel truly valued. will definitely be returning.
Breakfast was great, I used to live and Bedford and would regularly visit Pilgrim Wetherspoons so location of hotel upstairs was fantastic with internal access to Wetherspoons.
I'll definitely be back. I visit Bedford on business frequently. This is the first time I've stayed at the Mercure, but will definitely be back. The hotel looks great.
