In a pretty perfect position directly above the harbour and quay, with really stunning views, our house is just a few minutes walk down to the beaches, shops, pubs and the quay. The ferries to Falmouth leave every half hour from the quay at the bottom of the hill, and (in season) there's the little ferry to the National Trust headland opposite (fab walk, cafe and gorgeous beaches on the open sea). There are some great places to eat in St Mawes: cafes, pubs, and the hotels have seriously good restaurants too. There are kayaks and paddle boards for the adventurous, rock pools and crabbing for the kids, safe swimming on two beaches and even a tiny cinema for rainy days! The house is plain on the outside, but stylish and completely modernised on the inside, with WOW factor living room with views out over the whole harbour and some out to sea. It’s in a short row of ex-council houses with the millionaire pads at either end. This makes for a real community and we have great neighbours. The accommodation is spacious and comfortable: we've had a pebble floor with underfloor heating laid in the big downstairs shower room; oak floors downstairs; decking straight off the kitchen behind sliding glass doors, onto our south-facing garden; and parking for two cars right outside the house which is a real rarity in St Mawes. It's perfect for parties/families where one couple might like to be a bit separate - they can have the upstairs double with its own bathroom (good shower too) and let other guests have the downstairs super-king and twin rooms, with the big walk-in shower room and kitchen! If you have a child in a buggy, coming back up Grove hill will give you a bit of a work-out... the hill is short, but steep. We’re sorry but this also means that it’s unsuitable for people with disabilities.
Hi, we've completely gutted and restructured this house and now it is stylish and spacious and comfortable. Our family, including grand-children really love it in St Mawes - there's something for everyone here, and the house is a great base from which to enjoy it. You will find maps for your walks, kids' games and toys for rainy days, a nice big smart tv and a well-equipped kitchen. When the sun shines you can walk straight out of the kitchen onto our sunny decking (south-facing) to enjoy your meals or just sit in the sun and read... St Mawes is a great place for little kids - rock pools, crabbing, safe swimming, even a really nice play ground in the village. Adults can book the tennis courts if they bring their own equipment. It's all about the sea, though, really - everything is reached most quickly by water - the ferry to Falmouth leaves every half hour, and the tiny passenger ferry (12 seater) takes you to the headland opposite for glorious walk and great little coves and beaches. Adults enjoy the swimming/kaying and walking and the great food on offer in the rather swanky hotel restaurants (book in advance) or at the Watch house restaurant. There are also a couple of lively pubs.
St Mawes is an exceptionally pretty village on a sheltered curving bay open to the sea. You can opt to stay put for your whole stay and it will provide pretty much everything you need - as long as you like the sea, or walking. But there are some great places to visit fairly close by: fabulous gardens at Trewithen, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the Eden Project. And a day out to St Ives is very rewarding of course. You just have to go to Falmouth on the ferry - fun shops and cafes there too as well as a National Maritime Museum. And our house is a great place to come back to - tired but happy! Our no-through road is composed of mixed houses: starting with a row of pretty Victorian villas, then a dozen or so plain but pleasant 1950's council and ex-council houses (of which ours was one) and ending in some million pound pads at the end. It's a real community here and the housekeeper lives close by so if you need anything, we'll do our best to make it materialise quickly!
